Don't count on it. It seems a whole new bunch of not terribly friendly folks.

I noticed a lamp post out one morning and later informed my neighbor and told her that I would be happy to replace it if she wished. She responded that she slept in the bedroom in the front and the light bothered her at night. She was glad that the light was out.

Another incident of a light out across the street where a neighbor was a snowbird. I mentioned it to the guy that takes care of it when he is away and he told me that the sensor was out and he was going to replace it. It had a short in it that was causing the circuit breaker to shut off the power in the garage.

I try to be a good neighbor and assist those that want it, but I ask first. Sometimes there are good reasons for circumstances that draw our attention.

I have no qualms with the person that has good intentions on here, but I also understand some that are cautious. Some folks have migrated here from areas of the country that are not as safe. Don't be hurt if some folks are suspicious of good intentions.

I agree with you completely. I used to come on this site TOTV quite a bit....not so much lately.

It's difficult reading the nasty comments.

The Villages is changing. It's not so friendly anymore.

Here's someone who is trying to be neighborly, and all he gets is....stay off my property. How sad.

Dear Gerryann,
Thank you for your concern. I want you to know that I have walked for over 6 years daily, have received hundreds of "thank you", thank you notes and 1 complaint. I posted this thread in response to comments made on a thread about the complaint. Since I posted this, I have received private messages of encouragement. I love the Villages and it is still a friendly place to live. Sadly, there are people who are angry or live in fear and will not be happy no matter where they live. I encourage you to do an random act of kindness and you will see how friendly the Villagers still are.

Chances are this person is a dream come true. I think living by the guidance of ones religion is wonderful and I think I'm jealous to some extent that the walker take's their religious teaching to a practical hands on level that's amazing. It is my life experience based on where I have lived that a nice situation like this will ultimately turn out bad by the walker being hurt by a person who has had a bad experience with someone who think's they are being stalked. Some of the people you intend to help may be as stable as Jello. The same religious experience that the walker is executing to do good must also let them know that they are not to make anyone else uncomfortable. Clearly others are uncomfortable. I love your intention and if it was not carried out by the cover darkness or a knock on the door it may be more acceptable. I'm with RickeyD stay off personal property and use your calling to do good by volunteering your service's at a place thats in need of your kindness. Times have changed and will continue to change we must deal with it. Random acts of kindness do not have to be executed in a stealth mode.

Nice post Nucky and, IMHO, possibly the best post on this thread. I live in a home with a lot of glass and if I saw someone in my yard in the dark I would probably freak out and call 911. I also liked another poster's thoughts on how to approach someone whose light was out. Please do not replace my light, but I would be really pleased to be told that my light is out. In my little neighborhood we all take care of one another, but we do not overstep the boundaries.

As a person who lives alone 8 months a year I am aware of my surroundings. I take offense that you think people are angry, or in fear. Trust me I can take care of myself, but there are 90 year old women who live here alone and I would never call them in fear or angry, but taking control of their well being.
I run between 3 and 4am alone with pepper spray to ward off the possible wild animal. Happening on any person when I arrive in the dark at my home in my drive would challenge me as to how I would protect myself.
Yes you are trying to do good, but to tell residents we are in fear or angry, shame on you. I have had community watch get out of their truck to ask if I am ok at 3 am. Even though I am pretty sure it's them I am still on alert. I have always felt safe when I run, but have to say running into a person in my drive in the dark, how would I know it was you trying to do a good deed.
So sign me as not angry or afraid, just glad I have not found you in my drive in the dark.
Since we bought in TV in 2010, I have had many neighbors offer to do things for me, but it's was always in the light of the day.
Just a heads up there are many people who run in the wee hours, not just me.

Very well stated.

In a court of law if the trespasser is not shot inside of your house then you will have major problems

I like to see all the different opinions.

I have neighbors whose newspapers I would put in front of their doors readily if these papers were out for a while. Other neighbors I would be a little wary about walking up to their doors with a newspaper in hand. Changing their lamp post lights would be a whole different matter. A lot depends on what kind of relationship I have made with a certain neighbor over the 10.5 years I have been here now in the wonderful Villages. If it is a newer neighbor who has just moved in I would wait and see what kind of person this is before violating their space so to speak.

I think this poster has already stated that.

I sure agree with that remark. "Stand your ground" would be a tough road to hoe.

Sometimes unsolicited help is not wanted especially when it has to do with such a trivial matter. I'll take care of the little things. If something big comes up, and I need help, I'll ask. If I don't ask, rest assured I've got this !

What happens when Mr. Walker hurts himself while performing a task on someone else's property? Is he properly bonded and insured?

You are in fact referring to your immediate neighbors, those within an eyeshot of the front and back yards. The walker walks 5 miles. Hardly a neighbor in the literal sense.

js753 02-15-2016 01:24 PM

That is nice , but please do not leave notes on Ridge Spring drive, I am well aware of when my light is out!!!!
This is no concern of yours! Stay off my property.. !
PS it is not a deed restriction to leave your car in the street, These are county roads, call the Villages department if you have a problem...
Please mind your own business..!! Again... STAY OFF MY PROPERTY!

Good grief, can I walk my dog on Ridge Spring Dr? Can I have your full address so I will be sure to cross the street when I get close?

Short leashes make for good neighbors.
