rkimball: You are spot on. Police involving accidents had always had a fall back called "speed too fast for conditions". This charge was their insurance in case the other accidednt factors failed

I've heard several accounts of the lady who got her car stuck in the BV tunnel near Turtle Mound a few months back. I have a street legal and get my doors blown off (if I had 'em) about once a week by unregistered carts doing 30+ mph. This happens most commonly on Canal Street. I have seat belts and disc brakes and they don't.

A few weeks ago a friend was pulled over on Canal Street. There were a mixture of golf cars and cars pulled over with her. No tickets were issued. They were told to spread the word - effective January 1st, when sharing a road with a golf cart, any road, the speed limit for both cart and car will be 20mph. Tickets will be issued at $250 per offense if either the cart of automobile exceeds the 20mph limit. No discussion or debate, it's an automatic ticket. Each car and cart pulled over was going over 20mph on Canal. The officers told the people to spread the word, they are not kidding on this one - you will be ticketed and there is no room for debate!

I can't imagine Canal, Belvedere, Bailey Trail, O'Dell circle,to name a few, with a posted 20 mph for auto traffic. Canal isn't posted now. Belvedere is 30.

It sure would be nice to see something official in writing about these higher travel roads.

I do not think the roads you mention are changing. They have a designated golf cart lane and they are posted 30 MPH. I will have to go check Canal south of Stillwater, I swear I have seen a 30 MPH sign, but could be wrong. I do remember checking the other roads you mention last year as I could not understand why the main drag through Sanibel was 35MPH and I wanted to verify others that had a golf cart lane ON the road were only 30. It was always my impression that any road with a speed limit of 35 had the golf cart path OFF the road.

As I read these articles it seems to me they are targeting roads with NO designated golf cart path to set a new standard as some were 25 and others 20. I assume my 'hood will stay 15 unless they take down the signage.

I always leave open the idea that I am way off base, but this is how I have interpreted the articles...

I hope so but I have some doubt. I live on a street where the speed limit is 10 mph. That's certainly a safe speed but almost no one obeys it. Golf carts often go by at full speed and cars can, and do, go faster. I have never clocked their speed but it seems fast when you see them go by. They're certainly not going 10 mph. It's just lucky that I live on a loop so there's not a lot of traffic.

You know it must be fast when they kill rabbits. I found two dead rabbits in the road this past year.

the 20 is for currently unposted speed limit roads which currently as unmarked roads, are 25 mph other awww never mind ...its been explained too many times already.....:Screen_of_Death:

I'm just an observer who visited The Villages about 6 weeks ago and bought a piece of land to build on in the spring. I have to say I was dumbfounded when I read the speed limit was 20 because people were doing about 30-40. I commented to my husband about how fast people were driving and it seemed dangerous with all of the traffic and golf carts. I really do hope people will slow down. Everyone is retired, what's the hurry? Save a life....it may be yours. :confused:

In the summer there's less traffic and the year round residents are just 'in no hurry!
As the seasonal people return, you can see and 'feel' the stress rise because they are returning from the cities where it's a "get goin' attitude". They actually slow down and fit in as time goes bye.
As we move on to the snowbirds (renters) it gets even worse as they are only here for a short time and want to get as much in as quickly as possible.

The bottom line is GOLF CARTS GO 20 MPH OR LESS!

I noticed that in the new area south of 466a they are putting up speed limit signs for 15 MPH. (Same as a lot of streets south of 466.) I think it would be odd if they put up those signs in November and then change them in January.

I'm beginning to think those already set at 15 will remain 15, the primary change will be north of 466.

I believe the plan is to indicate the spreed limit within The Villages is to be 20 MPH unless otherwise posted. I would expect 15 MPH signs will remain. I expect some 25 MPH signs will be removed.
