My impression this system could be used for catching gate breakers or possible intruders, that could commit crimes........but then I have been wrong before and it won't be the last time. :D

Maybe the cars - but not the carts - until someone figures out how to get an identifier on them within camera range! ;)

Personally, I have never seen any problem with the gate cards. Sure, some folks complain they get a wet arm if it is raining. I have even heard some say their power window burns out from so much use.

I can open most gates by holding the card on the window. If not, I roll down the window. NO PROBLEM.

My sister lives in a development in Clermont. They use a large barcode decal on the back seat passenger window to enter their development. That works good, too.

What the point? All have to do push the red button. IMO gate should automatically open after you stop or get close. Don't they already have camera on most the gates? If not are the ones I see fake? Looks like half million waste to me, but I'm cheap WSS.

I am having a good time theorizing on why TV is spending $665,591 on license plate gate recognition software and server. Three possibilities come to mind.

As the gate attendants are unarmed and have no policing powers per Florida CDD regulations, maybe they will frown at the vehicles that show up as bad on the computer. However, it might be hard for them to do anything but smile and wave people on as that is what they have been doing for the ages. The gates that are not manned would have an Arnold Schwarzenegger voice saying something like “Please wait for the police to arrive to help you”

Another thought brings up the idea of doing something like the Florida pay turnpikes. One lane would be for residents whose license plate is recognized as being a residence something like a Sun Pass and the other would be for vendor recognized vehicles and others who have to pay. This might take some time to set up legally.

Finally and since this is a happy place, license plate recognition could be used to play the most popular state collage fight song as one passes through the gate. Ohio tags would of course trigger the playing of the Ohio State fight song. Then again, too much noise might not be popular to those close to gates.

So, I am stumped as to the purpose of spending this much money and will have to wait until next Wednesday to maybe be told the real story.

I've never had an issue getting the thingy to read my card opening the gate when it's raining, you just have to get close enough. Maybe explains why some get plowed over and no, it's not me!

If Fast food drive throughs can charge your order to Easy Pass (used to have it before moving here), shoud be able to read SunPass and see if person is legal. And get rid of the Red Buttons.

People, stopping running thru gates, ours has to be frequently repaired.

A few more ramblings of mine of the reason for and uses of license plate recognition software. Some of the following might be true.:D

As terrorists might be looking for soft targets, The Villages could check the ins and outs of vehicles to match against terror lists. If a certain number of visits are reached, then the FBI would be alerted about a potential attack somewhere in The Villages.

As TV is trying to reduce or eliminate solicitors, the software could recognize these people and note the frequency and location of their visits. Letters could then be sent asking them to visit another place.

A list could be compiled on local people living close to the Villages who visit TV on a regular basis. Questions could then be asked as to the nature of these visits.

I still would like to have it used to open the gates.

As cities/communities become smart cities, data collection and then data mining will become a useful tool within reason to enhance the good life for citizens within those locations. I am becoming more and more interested in how this software will be used in TV to better this already fantastic place.

My wife says that I chuckle and laugh a lot more here than back in Ohio! It’s a happy place and I want it to remain so. :beer3:

Get rid of those stupid gates on public roads already.

Something about civil liberties may crush your ideas.

Have you considered the safety aspect of the gates?

I am sure that it looks that way to you but if you lived here you would see that gates slow traffic and that protects cart drivers as they cross.

Perhaps you are correct. I will be living in the Villages shortly but i have been down there often for many years

Perhaps if the safety of cart drivers is your concern you can advocate for Senior Citizen re-licensing exams and more DWI and speeding patrols in the Villages.

Oh wait...making people control their drinking will cut into revenue at the town squares and Morse Familly percenttage rent...i forgot.
