I grew up in a city. I could <hear> the ships horns on the river. I could hear the sound of the street cars’ bells and the street cars stopping and starting. I could hear the sound of dogs barking somewhere among the homes around ours. I could hear the sound of taffy horse-drawn wagon (!) plodding down the street.

I could <smell> the four o’clocks in the afternoon. I could smell freshly mowed lawns.

I could <see> the skyscrapers downtown from the third floor of our home - at one brief point the governor’s mansion for the state.

I am thankful for all of my senses.

But folks, I draw the line on loud internal combustion engines, blaring music (from Abba to Vivaldi to Zeppelin), horns and loud conversation in national parks (and the like).

I love wind chimes! I think the sound is very relaxing.

Don't buy a house near a main road, or the turnpike if you don't want to hear car or truck noise..

It seems to happen twice a day, right at meal times, and they always seem to be headed North to Highway 42. I've about decided they're just making a BBQ run to Artman's.

On the other hand, I've noticed that the older I get, the more the noise of people having fun without me bothers me, which is odd, since my hearing's getting so bad I have to blast the TV a full volume just to make out what they're saying half the time. So maybe it's just me.

But the great thing about living long enough to see the 21st century, is that now there's a place you can always go to complain about stuff like that -- the interwebs!

So you’re the one with the Tv that can be heard out on the street. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

blasting the tv , it doesn’t have to be that way , you can use close captioning it takes only a short time to get used to it and you are doing people in your household and neighbors a favor , I would not be able to watch tv without it

I've also noticed the increase in noise. Some people are modifying their cart exhaust to make them louder "mas macho".

Expect more of this in the future.

Velvet 09-15-2021 10:13 AM

I have a TV on the lanai and I have asked each neighbor to let me know if it bothers them. No one did. But when my back neighbor closes their shutter I always lower the volume, which I check anyways with a decibel level app on my phone. If I can hear it, that’s good enough. Nobody else has to.

Yes, some people do this to motorcycles too. Invariable they are people who have low self-esteem and the noise is a desperate cry for attention.

I couldn't afford a loud car when I was younger, but now that I can I want to make up for lost time. Which car do you recommend that would be the loudest?

Actually, there is a school of thought that Loud Pipes Save Lives for motorcycle riders. (Nearly) silent bikes can be deadly as drivers DO NOT check their mirrors when changing lanes, etc. and more than once I revved my bike when I saw a driver getting 'twitchy' as some do right before changing lanes. I don't have a bike anymore, but when I did it wasn't blaring but it wasn't quiet either. Also, cars changing to use daytime running lights made it less safe for motorcycles which use to stand out more when they were the only ones that ran their headlights at all times.

Several have 'adaptive' exhaust that have actual valves that open up in the exhaust system at full throttle. A friends Jaguar has it and believe Shelby Mustangs came with it as well. A good set of Borlas or Magnaflows added to almost any vehicle will also take care of it.

so true
they should ban all of the gasoline golf carts= the people driving these things must be losing their minds creating all of the continual put put put noise.
I car about all of you neighbors that don't like noise, so I have the quieter, cleaner, peppier, electric model. It's the new thing - these lithium batteries and ac motors are pretty cool - long range and fast charge.
Of course, there are any of you fine folks disagree, I could hang some wind chimes from the gc roof....

New topic - Any of you that still may have a REAL sense of humor, do some YouTube surfing for Norm MacDonald content. Funny $hit. RIP Norm,

The quiet was a draw for us, too. So far, haven't seen the quiet. Most contractors seem to buy trucks with loud mufflers. Everyone has a different contractor for this and for that. They come in loud any day of the week. I had one sit in his truck yesterday blaring his comedy album. At one point the comedian said F*** this and F*** that. I was outside working in the yard and I noticed that he would wait until a lady or group of ladies were walking dogs and replay that section as they walked by the tinted-windows of his/her loud truck -- I guess to have fun attempting to offend.

As far as multi-generational and teenagers -- didn't leave that behind either. In my new neighborhood, there are still teenagers. Not 30 day visitors either, full families raising kids in the villages. I spoke to one family at the family pool and they were under 50 with 3 kids. They said they were living in the villages on a year rental until they decide if Florida is for them or not -- the husband has just been transferred and the wife was a stay-at-home mother. They were nice, so that was a plus -- and figured it wasn't my job to discuss deed restrictions and renter rules. Another guy is under 45 and raising his 14 or 15 year old alone in a house on the same street. This same guy goes to the quiet pool and blasts AC/DC and Hip Hop music every time.

Apparently, so many people have been bothered by this that a white Villages neighborhood watch truck comes by the quiet pool every 30 minutes each day as a result.

I'm not hating The Villages, but I figured things were going to be a little different -- I guess I am a little disappointed. And yes, I know anyone can buy in The Villages, but was told that not everyone can live in The Villages.

The boomer generation (a very large population) are at the age that is nearing death. As they die off their kids will inherent their houses ect.
These days of the lazy worker, it will be easier for the kids(40'to 50's) just to move here and live rather than selling it.
Deed restrictions have no authority over a inherited home. No age restrictions can be enforced. The Villages will be getting younger and younger as time goes on. With that said. These new residents will not have the same retirement goals as we did.

You are incorrect about Deed restrictions not having authority over an inherited home.

The subject...noise pollution is interesting to me. I have an inherited hearing loss. Some people have something called "hyperacusis" where sounds that do not bother other people, bother them.

In an area with a lot of new construction there will be a lot of annoying sounds that will very quickly disappear as that area is finished with construction.

Patience. Grasshopper.

Yes I heard that saying too but it is not true. I was riding a Kawasaki 6R and if you ride this sport bike you know it revs high and you can hear it 6 blocks away. When the red light changed I held back for a second in the right hand lane, I had the feeling the car on my left may make a right turn from the wrong lane. He didn’t, he started up and was more than half way through the intersection, I decided he was going straight through and throttled up (bike makes ‘wake the dead’ high pitch sound) but as I got half way into the intersection, the driver suddenly made a wide turn, right into me. I considered it my fault. Every time I would have jumped out my bike is way faster than the car and for some reason I didn’t this time. Of course he said, “I didn’t see you.” (White and Kawasaki green bike on a perfect afternoon?) never mentioned HEARING me at all.

I agree, I have often posted about excess noise. Particularly noise coming from the pro-type lawnmowers. Many MUST have been modified to have more OPEN and noisy exhaust systems. I doubt that the manufacturers have ones THAT noisy leaving their factories. I have to put on ear defenders when I am inside my house for a lawnmower cutting 2 houses away or across the street - and yes, the windows do rattle. Harley Davidson motorcycles are inherently louder than Honda or Yamaha. Fortunately, where I live, there is NOT too much Harley traffic and they just do one driveby. But, the lawnmowers are nearby for long periods of time and the lots are small and fencing is NOT allowed and there are often few trees or bushes to cancel some of the noise - it travels mostly unimpeded. The younger guys that cut the grass are strangely so immune to noise or so MACHO that they do NOT wear any ear defenders. In a few years, they will be GOOD customers at the hearing aid clinics. They also smoke so much they better hope for lung transplants in 15 years. And the pro lawn mower people drive their trucks like death and the devil are chasing them. I have never seen them get a ticket for speeding and they are always speeding. They also park their trucks and trailers just about in the middle of the street. And if they are mowing a corner lot they INVARIABLY park their rigs in the busier of the 2 possible streets. Its unbelievable - they seem to stir up all my pet peeves. Older TV Land people that do NOT have sensitive HEARING and are practically deaf, Don't realize how lucky THEY REALLY ARE.

That's a lot of pet peeves...

You must have bat ears if you need "ear defenders" inside, due to a lawnmower two houses away...
