I know exactly hoe you feel. We also have a Whirlpool fridgge and it makes a loud whirling noise, something like a fan ready to "take off". The tech told me the same thing. No one at Whirlpool seems to think it is abnormal. To top it all off, I have a new Whirlpool dishwasher that I have gotten to use 2 times since July, First it needed an new control board. Then a new pump and motor. Now it smells like garbage and they say it is because the door must be kept ajar. Do you believe that! I know one thing, I will never buy a Whirlpool appliance. They are cheaply made. The only problem I have is, What do I buy? Half the products come out of the same factory. Whirlpool owns a bunch of brands. I absolutely hate my refrigerator and dishwasher. I'm afraid we will have to replace them and we have only been here a few months. The tech told me that TV use to put in GE appliances but they had so many complaints that they switched to Whirlpool. Apparently not a good choice.

Thanks everyone. The guy from Baileys should have been here 1/2 hr ago. He is late. The fridge is loud but I am soooo afraid it will stop before he gets here sooo I sit and wait.

Patmoran, check consumer reports, I have heard good things about LG and Samsung.

- I will take any cure but yes we need to be persistant...they don't care cause they don't live with it.

Chances are the noise is caused by ice build up in a defrost section. We have a French door Samsung and I've had to take apart the back wall where the defrost section is and defrost the build up which was considerable. The ice gets in the way of the fan as it turns, thus the noise. Originally I thought it was the compressor. The unit is about 4 years old now. I don't know why the build up occurs but I've bought a new defrost heater and the next time the ice builds up, I'll replace that part. Speaking about other brands, the only LG appliance we have is a microwave and it's a piece of junk. No more LG for us. When shopping for the frig, I noticed the GE, Samsung and a third brand that I don't remember looked close to identical with the interior design. I questioned the salesman (Lowes) and he told me that Samsung makes all three. Which brand to buy? God only knows.

Update

sooo The guy from Baileys (Carlos) did arrive....a bit late.....but he was not in the house 5 minutes and said I needed a new fridge.

They came and replaced the refrigerator on Tues. Now I would not say the new one is quiet by any means but it is 1,000 times better than the old one!!!!

BTW, thanks to Sue Griggs - assistant of our Realtor , Jason Kranz - who got on Baileys and Waaa laaa we get results!!!!

Thanks also for all of you who have given suggestions for our desperate dilemma!!!!

Sleeping easier and quieter....SSmith

I just now looked up this thread to see how things were going for ssmith's refrigerator. Congratulations on getting a new one.

The reason I was looking for this thread is because we have an LG French-Door, less than a year old, that makes a vibration noise -- but only sometimes.

When this happens, we engage in a ritual where I lean against the refrigerator with all my might while my husband uses the skinny wrench thing that came with the refrigerator to level it -- again.

After we make it stop, he then says stuff about suspecting a linear motor and its housing and vibration or something like that which I do not care to understand. I just want it to stop.

Then we say we should call about it. But we have not done that yet. I have to admit that once we make it stop, we tend to forget about it and go on with our lives.

We just went through our routine again. But on Sunday morning -- Whoyagonnacall???

So even though it is fine for now, I think I better tape a big note to those pretty French doors to remind us to call before it eventually vibrates itself into serious disrepair. I cannot lean against it full-time to save it from itself.

Meanwhile, any theories or advice or commiseration on this sometimes annoying LG?

Have a 3 mo. old LG bottom freezer. Really like the unit, the factory service is awful. Have had 2 issues, loss of refrigeration and the loud (72 db) noise. Service involves an appointment in 4 or 5 days and you are told a part must be ordered. That takes 3 or so days. Then another appointment. Now 17 days with no refrigerator. Guess they hope you will just give up. Hope Home Depot will do some good, they claim to be working on it. No clearly better choices in residential units that I can find. Refrigerators used to last 20+ years. What has happened?
