Further proof old people are afraid of their own shadows. You are getting advice from 80+ year olds, plant what you like to look at and enjoy the beauty. The Villages would look very different without all of the beautiful palms.

Suggestions please... we r planning on landscaping which will include a Sylvester, Bismarck , & mule palm. Since it sounds like u have landscaped extensively Can u Recc a company that will maintain the palms, bushes, which would include fertilizing & trimming and weeding beds? TIA & sorry if a bit off topic.

The Bismarck is not cold hardy. It does better in southern Florida. We are looking at the mule palm and researching it as it is a hybrid. They are beautiful but would first like to see how long they have been around. Just an FYI

I had two Queen Palms cut down a few years ago by a company that no longer exists. I asked about having the stumps removed and was told that Mother Nature will remove them in one year; they are still there. Fortunately, the tops of the stumps are close to the ground and are not a significant problem. If the people that cut your palm down, tell you that the stump will be automatically gone in a year, do not believe them.

We had 9 queens put around our home 17 years ago.
We wanted that "tropical look/feel".
Fast forward....big mistake. Very dirty....large seed pods that open several times per year flowering and huge berries all over the place.
Need cleaning out at least twice per year at $25-$50 per palm.....price goes up as tree gets taller.

We are now down to having only 5 left.....they are approaching 25-30 feet tall. They will all be gone before this year ends.

There are less problematic palms to be had.....the only thing cheap about a queen palm is the initial purchase!!!!

Queen Palms suffer from "Butt Rot" and will eventually die.
They also get boring insects and woodpeckers will do a job on the palm's trunk.
Notice The Villages do not plant Queens on their property.
Avoid Queens even though landscape companies sell and plant them here.

I used Windburns Tree Service to remove mine…
352-636-2074 very good job, and they were quite reasonable.
Glad I got rid of it! :a040:

Slightly off topic, so which palms are the least problematic? We'd like to plant a few that won't get too large for our yard, suggestions? We also have dogs and have heard some palms are poisonous to them, ugh.

Did anyone else hear of this????

Yes, I wish I knew the contact number for you. We used them. Ask the Warranty Department or the ARC, that needs to sign off on tree removal. They can probably give you the name of the company that will buy many palms and pay you to have them remove the palm.

Love our queen palms

Most of the negative things said about queen palms are true. However, we think the queens are the most beautiful of trees, towering over, long fronds waving in the tropical breeze. Sit on your lanai with a good book, listen to the rustle of the fronds blowing in the breeze, add a glass of pinot. Life doesn't get much better. Of course, if you are interested in saving money and avoiding the hassle, just plant grass. We consider our queen palms as the jewels of our landscpe.
