My intent Gracie was to stop this lynching..... What is yours?

duffysmom 07-28-2012 04:06 PM

It sounds like a clique has taken over The Sanibel pool and they don't want any discussion on what is fair to their neighbors.

Look, I have the utmost respect for my neighbors and friends.
The women, who I did see leave that day, was off base and has
no idea abouy what goes on at the pool. She needed a different
venue for her reading. But to be clear, I could care less whether
I play my music or not. I do so because the folks who frequent
the pool ask me to. If you are not there, you have no idea what
this women is talking about and the discription that has been
potrayed about my music is not a fair rendering of what is being
presented. I take offence at some newbee complaining about
something that has been a normal practice since the pool opened.
The folks who have responded to the thread have taken this whole
thing out of true context. Besides......you should hear what I have
to offer. My peeps love it and thats all that counts....CHOW!

I wish I were closer, I think I’d like to hang out at the Sanibel pool. It sounds like an enjoyable atmosphere. I go to the pool to cool off in the water, to get exercise and to socialize. And music makes all of those things more enjoyable for me. I wish they at least piped in music at the neighborhood pools.

The pools, including the neighborhood pools, are social gathering spots. Sometimes neighbors gather and put together tables and play games or have parties. Residents bring their adult family members there for family gatherings. People talk and laugh. People have fun. And fun isn’t usually library-quiet.

graciegirl 07-28-2012 07:38 PM

The Odell pool has The Villages radio station playing. I thought all pools did. I couldn't understand why someone would play music over the local radio station.

How many of you have music at their closest pool. (That also belongs to ME....and everyone...;).)

tony&tina 07-28-2012 08:16 PM

I totally agree.... I personally did not come to TV to be by myself and complain about people socializing, music playing and fun being had by all. People who do not want to be bothered should stay home and read...........

I've got the toughest Tiger you ever saw in this hunt. She is about 5'2 and weighs about 115 pounds soaking wet. She is usually at the pool at least 4 or 5 days a week. We live in Sanibel now! Unfortunately, last winter due to a trip and all the moving "stuff"----you know decorating----buying new furniture for the new house----etc. etc. she was probably only at the pool 10 or 12 times. I was a the pool maybe twice myself. You see I would rather golf than swim or sunburn. Nothing unusual going on then----can't even remember any music-----if there was it wasn't noticed by either of us. All we can remember are some very nice people "hanging" around the pool.

Lori: Sorry for your impression (and others) of Sanibel Pool. This thread has gotten completely out of hand. My Tiger can "charm" ol' JimRoy and his band of followers so that the music is at a level (if at all) that you and me can enjoy a "read" without loud interruptions. I know because I've seen her work a crowd before! After all, he is a Jim---- just like me and I know has to be a reasonable very nice guy. Heck, we have probably talked before! Unlike our Representatives in Washington, I think we can come to a reasonable compromise on this music thing. What do you think?

You are right this post has gotten out of context, all I asked if it was "the norm" for people to play their music, IMHO I did think the music was a little loud but if that is what the majority likes than my intent is not to disrupt that practice. I like music, I like socializing and talking to people at the pool. If I want to read and find the music distracting I will read elsewhere or tune into my iPod.

So no compromise necessary, the majority is for the music, don't change a thing, ENJOY and I will to next time I am there! Can we just forget this whole topic?

I don't now who you are.... But I think I love you... If you are at the pool and the people have their music too loud, you will find we are all very nice people and don't wish to disturb anyone. Please, tell the person involved. Everyone can have a good time at the pool. There is no need for baseball bats or the battle of the iPods.

Thank you for this post!

samhass 07-29-2012 08:58 AM

Hmmm...music at the pool could cause me to break out into spontaneous dancing. I sometimes find myself dancing with my cart at Sweetbay. Mind you, the music has to be right for this to happen.
Don't make me dance. You might not want to see it. I'm not twenty anymore and I'm not skinny..

PennBF 07-29-2012 10:36 AM

What the heck?

Am I right in reading that someone is going to a pool and playing music which
may violate those who have gone to the pool to rest and relax? What are the controls? Can I go to the pool, bring my wireless speakers and play loud
rock? Oops, why not? Oh it may violate some swimmers music interest. I once heard a great person say they,"believed in censorship as long as they could be the censor". This is what should rule music at the pool. I am all in favor as long as I am the one who decides what is played and how loud.
No one agrees to my point..Then music should not be allowed. I personally
love music and have all sorts of music in our home including Itunes, wireless
speakers, travel speakers for the car, the best earphones, etc. However,
would not be inclined to force others to accept my interests.

Lori, posts like this take on a life of their own. No fear, in a short while this topic will fade into obscurity and you can go back to being anonymous and not notorious at the pool.:coolsmiley:

PennBF 07-29-2012 11:03 AM

Amazed

I am amazed that someone actually believes they have the right and are entitled to play music in a "public place" without regrard to the other person.
I am amazed that anyone would support such a serious violation to the other
person's right to peace and quiet. To compare it to laughing, or someone
talking loud because of another person's hearing challenge does not even deserve an answer. I guess when there are over 90,000 people in a community it will attract different attitudes but this one does not even pass the test of reasonableness. :ohdear:

You would have thrown it in the pool?? Seriously? Playing music may be considered rude, but I think throwing his music box into the pool might be breaking the law. It sure isn't worth making the trip to Bushnell in cuffs because you considered someone rude.

I haven't been on here for awhile and I'm very surprised by your response. This is so unlike you. You never came off as violent before and in fact I know several people who know you and they have never mentioned that you have a violent side. What's up?

There is in fact music in public places. There is music at the squares (much like at the pool), there is music in the stores, and there is music at many of the pools.

If you go to a park, people play their music all the time.

Why the violence for music at a pool that yu haven't been too? And after everyone is trying to work it out?

This is a very nice pool. I've been there several times and the people are wonderful. Why woul d ANYONE suggest violence????

Nope. Once a thread is started, it takes on a life of its own. Threads morph and take on life, and have been know to start neighborhood wars, and I think maybe even a sink hole.

John_W 07-29-2012 05:32 PM

We go to the Tamarind Grove Neighborhood Pool about once a week and I always take my radio, usually tune it to WMNO 98.9 in Orlando they play classic rock on the light side. Most of the time I set the volume so I can hear it within about 5 feet.

On the average sunny day by about 2pm or 3pm in the afternoon you'll find every lounge chair will be taken and between 15 and 20 people in the pool and the conversation level is so loud I can't even hear my radio. That's a fact.

Think throwing the person in the pool violent, throwing the music box in the pool a misdeamnor........................

Only One?

Am I the only one that has heard of "ear phones". I go to the pool when it is not oppresively hot and listen to my music using EAR PHONES. They are
great and do not invade the peace and quiet of others.
For the music challenged people these can be found in every electronic store,
Walmarts, Sams Club, Radio Shack and can run from $10.00 to $500.00.
That is the respectable way to hear music and not by poluting the air with
something a person may like and others do not. Try them, you'll love them.

graciegirl 07-30-2012 08:58 AM

Went to the pool today. It has been a long time since going to the pool since my foot just got out of the orthopedic boot. Our closest pool is Tall Trees. Lovely bunch of folks there. Warm and friendly and welcoming and one was playing his radio. I guess it was on...because when I go IN the pool, my hearers come OUT of my ears. So it is always a non issue for me. I always have the option for silence. lol.

I LOVE this part of my life.

swimdawg 07-30-2012 09:20 AM

Yes to Ear Phones!

I couldn't agree more! We all have different tastes for music....and I always use my ear phones. Why should I subject my taste in music to anyone else?

Another earphone user here. I recently bought a pair of waterproof H2audio earphones that come with a waterproof case for my i-pod. Perfect for the pool!

I have H2o audio Interval waterproof set as well! Love love love it! Now we can listen to what WE want to hear in and out of the water, right? And we're not subjecting anyone else to our type of music.....and visa versa!!! :)

I agree with earphones. John I have experienced the noise level of those conversations.

We've become a society that needs to be entertained every minute of the day and night. Whatever happened to listening to the wind or birds singing or the hum of our neighbors chatting at the pool without music blaring. We are privileged to have the Squares for entertainment, go there and let the rest of us have peace and quiet.

Right on, Duffy. I have walked out of many restaurants because the music was too loud. When I go out to eat, I want to be able to have a conversation with whomever is with me without yelling across the table. I should not have to be forced to listen to music.

This is why my husband said that if and when we build or buy a gently used home, it will have a pool and a birdcage and be on a golf course even though we do NOT play golf.

When we rented such a home, it was nice and quiet and peaceful at all hours of the day and night. There are plenty such homes to buy; pool homes with no back neighbors. We couldn't even see our side neighbors lanais.....the way the land was shaped.

If one is trying to read a book or just relax, as others have said, who wants to hear blasting music.......or loud mouth cursing men.

Being "early to bed" and "early risers" ourselves.......and certainly not party animals, we enjoy a quiet atmosphere.

Ditto, as far as visitors, when our children and infant grand daughter visited, you couldn't hear a peep. If one speaks in a soft normal voice, no need to upset the neighbors. Maybe some of these people are deaf....or just always were loud mouth types.

justjim 07-31-2012 11:09 AM

I can see both sides of what is probably not even an Issue! Some people want peace and "reasonable" quiet and others like to "party" and have fun. In both cases, the key is to be courteous and respectful. I enjoy an occasional beer or glass of good wine but have little or no tolerance for an obnoxious drunk. I have heard of them being at the pool and I've seen them myself at the Squares. This is not being respectful!

gmcneill 07-31-2012 12:43 PM

FWIW

We anticipated potential conflicts re: music genre likes/dislikes in public places when we discussed operational policies at our soon to be opened city-operated aquatic facility, named Calypso Cove.

We decided to get in front of the issue by using our sound system to play only easy listening steel drum/island/beach-themed music bc we wanted to create a tropical environment escape for our visitors.

Visitors who preferred to listen to other types of music could do so on their own devices but only if they used a personal listening device such as ear pods, ear phones...

In eight seasons of operation since implementing that policy, not a single complaint or objection but numerous compliments.
