Yes, there is considerable skill required to be a world-class player. You need great eye hand coordination and with the newer electronic machines, you also need an understanding of the rule set. It's not simply a matter of hitting the balls around the playfield. You also have to know the sequence of accomplishments needed to score the big points and/or get to the end game. There are newer games out there that are so complicated that only the quite experienced players know the rule set.
Always remember, pinball players have balls of steel.......

I remember an Archie game (of the Archie, Betty, Veronica, Reggie, and Judhead variety). It had a "looping" flipper pin near the lower left, and if you hit it JUST right, the ball would catch the curve, come around again, and you could flip it again. If you caught it -just- JUST right - you could do this indefinitely. It was a 10-point curve with a bonus if you got 5 in a row. I was able to get it most of the time, and it was fun just to see how many times I could flip it into the loop until I missed. If you waited too long, you'd lost the ball down the hole. If you flipped at the wrong second, it wouldn't catch the loop and would just shoot up higher onto the game board.
I think my personal record was 40 times before I got tired of the loop and wanted to go on to the next challenge.
