This discussion brings back memories of a song with a line like this:

"I threw my father from the train a kiss"

I can not remember any more of it. That may be a good thing.

That sounds like German sentence structure.

And if you speak Rhode Island: Throw your father upstairs the keys!

My dog only wants to pee in Fumar's yard.

I believe it was. That was back when jokes and songs could get away with such behavior. If I remember correctly, it was about a kid going off to summer camp.

It seems now that seniors are the only unprotected species when it comes to being the subject of jokes.

Wow, this thread has certainly got off the tracks. Should I say derailed?

Your behavior is fine with me. Our college student granddaughter completed her spring quarter in Austria and returned here to Cincinnati a couple weeks ago. We tease her about "thinking" in German. Those are the kinds of things she is saying recently.

P.S. I love it when the thread gets derailed. It probably annoys Tony though.

What an interesting discussion! I don't recall discussing (much less thinking about) misplaced modifiers in the past 40 or 50 years, yet here we are, stretching our little gray cells and learning something new so we can astound everybody at the next block party. :throwtomatoes: Or not.

Boomer, I actually watched the video about the new punctuation mark at your Grammar Girl link. :22yikes:

What was the modifier that the POA misplaced?

(flunked 10th grade English by Mrs Traphagen)

Sit right here with me.

Talk Host 06-20-2010 06:48 AM

Ah, but what about gerunds?

JLK

tony 06-20-2010 07:30 AM

Geez, all I said way back there is that it happens, LIKE a misplaced modifier. It was just an innocent hyperbolic gerundism, until the English majors got ahold of it.

Whalen 06-20-2010 07:46 AM

Soccer anyone?

Boy o Boy, talk about soccer being boring (no offense Russ) I think TOTV wins hands down...GERUNDS??????

bkcunningham1 06-20-2010 08:00 AM

I think the issue here is the juxtaposition of the statement made by the POA about TOTV stance in regards to information about TV. The misplaced modifier and the gerund are incidental to the original discussion. Also, a gerund must end in the suffix -ing in order for the verb to become a verbal and act as a noun.

Yeah, well, you think it's been boring around here? Wellllllll, I will show you boring.......

I have a really sore throat. I feel like my throat is going to come out through my ears. I have a temperature. I do not have time for this. It has been going on for a few days even. And now it is Sunday. And now I think I am going to have to go find a Doc-in-a-Box. The Doc-in-a-Box will give me antibiotics. I get all weirded up about taking antibiotics. I rarely take them. I gotta be really hurting before I take antibiotics. It is a beautiful day and I am a whiny butt with a sore throat. And did I tell you that I have a temperature? And did I tell you how much I hate to take antibiotics? But I think I am going to have to. And did I tell you about my sore throat and how bad it hurts? Or is it badly???

And also, when Judy said that thing about the link having a video about a new punctuation mark, I tried to see the video, too. And I could not get it to play. And now there is a punctuation mark out there that I have never heard of. And I cannot play the video. And I am devastated. And, yeah, I know that I bastardize the heck out of punctuation marks, but I know I am doing it and I do not care. And I also write in sentence fragments. And I like doing that. Yes. I do.

And also, I know Mr. Tony, Mr. Admin, Sir is an English major. He is always trying to fake us out about that. But he has to be an English major. Did you see him use the word 'juxtaposition' a few posts back? Didya? Didya? Huh? And he started this whole thing about modifiers. And I don't think it is a problem with a misplaced modifier anyway. I think it's an awkward sentence structure that just needs a little clarification and a better word choice than 'associated.' - - (And now for a shameless confession. I, Boomer B. Boomer, read the POA newsletter online sometimes. I don't know what happened to their forum, but the newsletter is still there I think. And I will continue to read it. Yes! I will! I know nothing is perfect. I like a little balance in my information. I think balance is a good thing. I am a Libra. Yes. I am. We like balance. I always buy chairs in pairs.)

Soooo, how's that for boring.....

Boomer -- face down in the stream of consciousness again...and did I tell you that I have a sore throat and a fever? Yes. I do.
