Curious to know how long folks run their pool pumps. Someone told me he runs his only one hour a day.

I run mine 8 hours a day, but it is to continue moving the water through the solar heating panels more then cleaning the pool. During the summer when the water is very warm I cut it back to 5 hours a day. Probably could go a little less, but I think an hour is very minimal.

It will have the pool pump come on and stay circulating when the temps go below a certain point.

My controller freeze protection cycle default level is 38 degrees. The reason being the temp sensor is in a protected area and the real outside temp may in fact be lower, start at a little higher temp sensor wise.

The pump will run continuously until the temps get back above the set level.

If you are not doing this you run a significant if not certain risk of a breakage some where in the system.

Google "swimming pool pump times" and you will find a lot of input.

I no longer have a pool but 1 hour a day won't do if pool is kept open.

As it so turned out (according to energy audit), We were running our spa pump, about $80 a month!!

And here is the kicker, never using the spa, needless to say, spa pump is turned OFF!

Remember, the pump and filter are not just for filtering the water. They also circulate the chemicals. The entire contents of the pool needs to be circulated several times each day.
