Well.... "kind of". My father, a judge, preached "self insure" as soon as you are able. His advice was to NEVER stop making auto payments even when loan was paid.. just keep paying to self in a separate investment account. Now I did not follow all that good advice, but, if something "goes wrong", yes, of course, you pay out of the money you have invested for all the years something did not go very wrong. As most know from their 401K investments, that kind of compounding can be amazing. When thinking, there was no way to put that self insurance money into a non taxed account, of course there is. For those not retired, if they put 2K a year into their 401K or 403b, they can simply INCREASE that by the amount they are NOT paying the insurance company..no insurance company is going to pay those kinds of interest rates, adds up far more than rule of 8's in a bank savings...LOL. But, like everything else, self insuring is not for everyone of course !

I've been a customer of USAA since the mid-70s. I moved here 3 years ago, and had no trouble getting a new homeowners policy in 2019.

That said, I was curious, and called USAA this morning (March 7, 2023). Yes, they ARE still writing new policies here for service members, as well as renewing them. I encourage interested existing clients of USAA to give them a call and confirm if you are shopping for Homeowners Insurance.

OP mine was also ridiculous from Progressive. I met a person from Farmers who told me how to get it lowered. I was able to get it lowered about $900. I’m not going to list them here because it will cause a big debate. Good luck

Then Progressive took over:
2021 $1814
2022 $2186
2023 $6630 (note that is three times the previous year)

I went ballistic of course and checked with the agency to be sure it wasn't some kind of error or scam, only to be "reassured" that the amount was correct.
Obviously, I'm going to shop around but my blood pressure is still up, especially after reading posts in this string that show most increases to be no more than 10 or 15 percent. The premium is due March 5th.

How did you make out Burnie? Inquiring minds want to know.

I believe the ins. companies are required to send their renewal quotes out 60 days before policy expires. I'm expecting the guillotine to hit me very soon.

When I talked to him, he told me they will renew present policies but are not writing new policies. I will be calling them again today.

Have had them since 2020. Never had one claim at all.
2020 Premium- $693.; 2021-$755.; 2022- $916.; 2023 Renewal Quote $1,883. WOW!!
105% Increase, for NO changes in coverage, and NO claims. Yes, TOTAL SHOCKER!!
No doubt hurricanes have affected this!
Is this what has been happening to Home Owners Ins. in T.V. and or all FL??
What have others experienced for rate changes??
Thanks for your replies.

Our rates are very similar to your but our rate for 2023 is only $1300.

Except for winter weather no state income tax and low school taxes, Fl. is getting more expensive to live than my primary home in NY along with more congestion on the roads with people moving to Fl.

Listen to the captain and Tennille. Shop around.

AAA to ?

Joining in on this long conversation. AAA quote on our 1990 home up $1000 for auto and home with no claims, 9 year old roof. We are having a 4 pt wind mitigation inspection tomorrow which will let us know how much life is left on the shingles.
Got quotes from State Farm, about $1000 less, and The Villages Ins, about the same…..but Villages is using Cabrillo Coastal for the home insurance.
Anyone know about this company or used them for a claim? Someone else earlier mentioned their Cabrillo doubled….maybe our quote is good for the first year, then a big jump?

In other words it gives the Insurance Companies a license to steal

How is cracking down on frivolous lawsuits giving the insurance companies a license to steal? Doesn't the current system give the injury attorneys a license to steal?

Yes ours went way up. Thanks to a woman at Farmers, she told me how to get it down. I would use Farmers but I have my car insurance through my union and I can’t write my house through my union. It’s complicated

I applied for USAA a couple of weeks ago. First attempt was online which was not accepted, and they provided a phone number to call customer service. Called USAA and the service rep could see I had applied online. She asked me all the questions I had been asked online. Result...your application is denied because of excessive wind damage in Florida.
