Been here 24 years. It has never been a gated community. An allusion. Most of the roads are county roads.

The Morris vs Morse thread comes to mind. :D

True, but it doesn't have to be easy for them. Consider two houses next to each other. One has a monitored alarm system, cameras, dead bolts, a sign that say this home protected by Smith and Wesson and a large rottweiler inside. The other has unlocked doors and 4 newspapers laying in the driveway. Which one do you think the criminal will target?

The house with the sign probably has more worth stealing.

I was told and I agree, the gates are there to slow traffic coming into a Village or area. Most areas directly behind the gates have golf cart crossings. Without slowing down for them, we would see a lot more near misses or worse between carts and cars. I know in ours as we enter Springdale off the cart path, we look for the gate to be down to cross over to our side of the road. Just my opinion.

The Villages isn't a gated community, on the tour we took and several since it is stated as a "community with gates", which is what it really is.

Hi folks, We have been here for 8 months now, and my comment / question is; The Villages calls themselves a gated community, which technically it is. However, anyone can come through the gates, either by pressing the red button in the residents lane or going through the visitor lane. A true gated community has resident stickers with bar codes on the vehicles which allows access. I understand that when the red button is pressed a picture of the vehicle is taken, don't know if that is really true, but that does not do much to add to security. Please don't misunderstand, I don't have a problem, it just seems to me that the gates, along with the guards, don't make this a true "gated community". Further, I question the need for the gates, guards and guard shacks since they do not seem to be making anything secure. What am I missing here?

Where does The Villages call themselves a gated community???? Your second sentence!

After liveing in TV since 2003 I have NEVER been told that we are a gated community. We are a CONTROLED ACCESS COMMUNITY. YOU should have understood that from the beginning.

Stonecrest and Del Webb Spruce Creek call themselves gated communties, but I've driven to the gatehouse and said I'm going to the golf course and was let right in.

If you want to see a real gated community of homes in the $200K to $300K range. Drive about 75 minutes southwest of here to Spring Hill and to Timber Pines on US 19 or it's sister community 5 miles south, Heritage Pines on County Line Road. Tell the gate agent you want to go to the golf course, or to see a house for sale, or to visit someone, and they'll tell you, you can't come in. Unless you're with an approved Realtor or a resident has left your name on the guest list for that day, you don't get in.
