Default Reason for attic stairs

We have not installed attic stairs yet but will after what happened to one of our neighbors in Amelia. He fell off a ladder yesterday accessing the attic, hit his head on the concrete garage floor and died. There was an article in today's paper that referred to the incident as an "unidentified" man. He fell on his wife who was taken to the hospital. How tragic, particularly for this time of year. I am going to do a search on attic stairs installers.

I read that article this morning, what a tragedy. How many of us have put ourselves in similar hazardous situations?

Tim the Toolman put steps in for us 3 times. (No he didn't do a bad job, we're on our third house.) He's mentioned regularly here on TOTV, phone number is 352-217-0561.

Default Reason For Attic Stairs

I would caution all to be careful at heights. I had Werner attic stairs. model 2210, that broke this past spring in Indiana home. I tumbled from about 3 ft going up and fractured my shoulder.
I complained to werner and saw on line that at least 3 other incidents with this model.

This is very sad our thoughts are with the family and we hope the wife recovers. We live in Amelia and heard the Lifeflight Wednesday. We had also been using a ladder but had arranged for stairs to be installed by Bernie Coluccio that night. If you need attic stairs installed I can highly recommend Bernie(518-461-1805) he has done a couple of jobs for us and we have been very happy with his work.

Stairs are a must. Because of the safety factor it surprises me they are not put in during construction and simply added to the home cost.

We Agree Shoffer.
Our homes in WW and TV both had them so we assumed they came that way.
We're going to put a couple more in the TV home, any place there's ample storage and headroom above.

Back home in Md we installed them as soon as we moved in, and in the summer we pull them down to let warm air vent into the attic - as we don't use the AC at all.

Because garages get so hot in TV, and they are not 'under climate control' why there are not ceiling vents and more roof vents above.

We frequently pull down the stairs to let hot air rise out.

We joked about the garage:
"It's so hot in ere, we should step into the sauna to cool off"

Oh Jo. I am so sad to hear this. How awful for those people and their family.

I don't even think attic stairs are safe really. I WISH that there was a home model that had real stairs with a stair rail to the attic and the attics were configured for finishing for an extra room.

Default Stairs

After moving in we had pull down stairs installed They are very sturdy aluminum with side rails. Cost a little more but really worth it.Regardless of what type of ladder you use it's really not that safe since you're usually lifting something in or out of your attic area, so your off balance anyway. Regarding heat in the attic I also had 2 solar powered exhaust fans installed. They made a big differance and only use good old florida sunshine.

Great point, gg.
I notice several premiers and designers that have rooftops 30-35' in the air, covering huge attic spaces. Some have dormers/gables with real windows.
Has anyone ever thought of carving out even a small room, nook, or otherwise?

While we wouldn't consider a two-ton king size waterbed, it might be interesting to have a tiny get-away with an outside view.

Default re: Reason for attic stairs

Skip,

We are closing on a CYV in Ponciana at the end of March and intend to install attic stairs. We are interested in looking into the solar powered exhaust fans that you mentioned. Where did you get them and what is the cost like?

Thanks for any info.

We used the Solar Guys - highly recommended by many on this forum - to install both a solar attic fan and a solar tube.

Default Attic Flooring

Do the attics have flooring or does that need to be installed to use the storage space?
