I've regripped mine a few times and while I agree a vice is not necessary, it SURE makes it easier. I wouldn't do it without a vice and the rubber vice block often sold with the kits.

I have had Birdie's golf regrip many clubs for me and they do it in 10-15 minutes at a cost of just the grips.
