I don't know if all postal stations have a slot for mail that doesn't belong to you, but mine does. It takes 5 seconds to drop the mail in the slot. If it comes back, just do it again.

Does "Return to Sender" mail have to be mailed from a US post office please? Thanks (Dont want to trash the mail, as it will never stop).

It will never stop. After 8 years we still get junk mail addressed to previous owners. It took at least five years to get the county to stop sending their voter registration cards here.

I get mail addressed to the SAME PERSON constantly that has never lived at my address. I know that for a fact since we built the house new.

You have to cross out the bar code on the envelope also, otherwise the automated equipment in the Post Office will deliver it back to you.

I suspect that when you send mail back at the post station , it just goes in the waste basket .

Unwanted mail

I solved this by talking to my mail person and letting them know specifically whose mail goes in my box. It's not 100%, but I get very little OP's mail. There is also a website to fill out a form for a deceased person so that you no longer get a majority of the mail for that person. Especially advertising and spam mail. Hope this helps.

The only mail that can be returned or forwarded is FIRST CLASS mail. all non profit, standard and non profit will still be delivered to the address. You inherit all their junk mail!

Just tell the people in the mail station and it will stop.

If you write return”return to sender “ on the envelope, the people in the mail station will have more paperwork to do. Just ask them to stop putting any of their mail in your box.

I think the USPS is supposed to put mail in your box that has your NAME AND ADDRESS on it, or "resident". If anything else is placed in your box, they are not doing their job. I feel no obligation to tell them to "return to sender" or anything else. I will just drop the mail into a USPS mailbox, and let them deal with it.
