We've lived here 9 years and have gradually noticed a change. I'm appalled at how people use the social media sites to negate other's opinions, to put down and to be disrespectful in every sense. One of my favorite expressions is "more is caught than taught!" So is that what they all have done to their own kids and grandkids??? Must make them all proud!! I was raised with the notion that demeaning others is to try to make one's self feel better or good. The bullying isn't happening just in schools...apparently it's being done by folks who should know better!!! |
:BigApplause: Thank you, that is something that needs to be appreciated, despite the criticism the part time residents seem to always get on this forum. Z

I have noticed the same gradual change you have also. Social media is a big part of it......it seems that social media is the larest single influence on so many, especially those that post this forum. TODAY, it was reported that there were many more posts on Facebook than originally was thought that began "overseas" from a "foreign" country that were intended for one thing....to polarize all of us. It has been and continues to work. I know we must stay away from political discussions but will just say, my wife and I have been going out for "breakfast".....at least coffee every morning almost since we got here in 2000. The tone even there where discussion was the keystone has completely changed. People are discussing issues that are not even issues....I mean, not even a real thing, yet they are convinced it is. This causes so much grief because try and tell them it does not exist and you have an argument. Stepping aside from social media, I notice on here folks seem to judge others using a unique and strange scale. We read about people of "such and such" generation and how they worked for what they got and those who may be suffering did not. Well, how in the world does everyone know what life dished out to everybody else ? A lady from one of our "exclusive" neighborhoods is reported to be involved in a huge Ponzi scam, essentially robbing others of hard earned money, and not a word. Let a robbery happen in Wildwood or Leesburg and you will see the "judges" come out to determine these bad people had a choice and chose not to work and go on welfare. How do people KNOW that ? Betting the operator of the Ponzi scheme would be welcome at a TOTV get together, but I believe that the landscapers in The Villages are for the most part hard working people trying to do what most Americans have tried to do for many years....make a better life for their children and their family. I hope my point is clear and not considered political. Just a statement of fact As I read this forum...there is a snobbish type of judgement passed here that is troubling. And so much is becoming obvious off the forum in my travels. Summarize.....we have lost touch with the truth.....we have lost touch with what values made this country great.....we are breeding a group who feels THEY and THEY ALONE are supreme. If you think I am over stating this, I suggest you do some reading about what is happening on social media...the complete lack of honesty, fairness or even simple human compassion. Sorry for being so long but this really has bothered me, and no matter how much I may disagree with anyone will never be mean or lie about them |

And I Thought It Was Only Me . . .

I am not a golfer but find the same "entitlement" (to use the words of many others) to be pervasive throughout The Villages. I will say, without equivocation, that I have met more nasty people here in TV, than anywhere else I have ever lived. Very sad that such negativity prevails here. I vividly recall an incident which I will never forget, where I asked a man with his wife if he would mind moving one chair over, so my friend and I could sit next to one another at one of the Squares one night. He glared at me as though I had two heads and emphatically told me no! And if I continued to "bother" him, he would call the police. Huh? I couldn't believe him. But trust me . . . No, we did not get the chair but he did not win the verbal battle! :rant-rave: |

NO, we just don’t let rude people push us around. I have seen so many rude people in T.V. And when they try to bully you they’re surprised when you politely stand up to them. |
[QUOTE=Cobh521;1542884]Similar situation of an entitled person. My husband and I were seated in outside area of restaurant. We just received our food. A woman came up and said. I am going to leave a drink on your table so I can have your table when you leave. I explained to her that we would bee there for a while as we were staying to enjoy the DJ. She continued to stand and stare at us while we ate. I again told her the table would not be available for quite a while and that we would like to enjoy our meal without her staring at us. She proceeded to take one of the chairs and pushed some men out of the way so she could sit down. After all that she just got up and left giving us a dirty look![/QUOTE
She sounds just like some woman I recently saw in Culver’s. She saw a man at a table for 4 next to us, put her # down on his table, and stood and glared at him. He ignored her. Then she went to a table where a couple were finishing their ice cream who then ate fast to give her the table. Her behavior was the rudest thing ever. |

OK, that was funny!! :1rotfl: And oh-so-true. |
Not rude
I don't think speaking up for yourself is rude ! New Yorkers are some of the nicest people in the world but if you are a bully to them they will "speak up" and not roll over for a bully or a person who thinks they are entitled to ignore the rights of others. :spoken:
|
We only see this anti-social behavior worsening in the villages, but in all likelihood, it's happening all around the country.

Nothing regional or local about it.
It’s the way of the land, getting worse every day. Rude. Crude. Lewd. And downright cruel and callous. We are in the throes of the effect of our 24/7 media that allows people to pick their own poison. Those among us who have a more hateful bent than others have had that tapped into and now think they can let it all hang out. Friendships, families, neighborhoods, churches, clubs, and even marriages are being affected as people allow themselves to be under the influence of the screens that surround us. Big screens, little screens, everywhere screens, screens, screens, telling us what to think, giving us a reason to be angry, every day — angry. People are abdicating their individual ability to think things through and to question — and to see each other. It has all happened so fast. Jon Meacham, who is a well- known historian and Pulitzer Prize winning biographer, has a new book. The title is The Soul of America: The Battle for Our Better Angels. It’s not just in TV. It’s everywhere. — Sometimes I am glad I am kind of old. |

Really enjoy Meacham. Cannot say more...."mother" (not mods) are watching. Get too close, and your post will disappear. Meacham has a great feel for history and results of present on future. Plus he is a great writer. |

that has over 20 MILLION people you have to stand up for yourself. New Yorkers happen to be very nice. Just remember when 911 happened, they all helped each other. |
