????? Rumble in the distance
Have the windows open and just heard a long, low rumble (the house even shook a bit) off in the distance! Would this be a jet going thru the sound barrier? Or thunder?? Just curious if anyone else heard it too.

I heard something like that the other day. Not sure if it was a large truck or bombing practice that is done not far from here. Generally when there will be bombing practice, there is some mention of it in the newspaper.

Heard it but don't know what it was. Could have been from the new area across 466A.

Seriously, I have heard similar sounds as described coming from the Speedway Park off 466a and the Lake Co/Fruitland Park Speedway that's fairly close to Hadley. I don't however think that the sound would travel much, if any past Hadley. http://originalspeedwaypark.com/Weather%20&%20Map.htm I've also heard some aircraft flying around overhead lately that I haven't heard previously. You never know, it could also be us zooming around on our first and newly purchased gas golf cart.

The military has a bombing range around the Ocala National Forest. That is probably what you heard. I used to see a notice in the paper when they were going to use it but haven't seen the notice so who knows.

So "that" probably explains it! It did sound like an explosion...but at a distance! Off to the northeast and it was early evening! Around dusk or shortly after!

Bombing range? And some folks can't tolerate the train whistle?

The Navy's Pinecastle Impact Range in the Ocala National Forest is the only place on the East Coast where the Navy can do live impact training. The Navy drops nearly 20,000 bombs a year at the site, a few hundred of which are live. The Navy has used nearly 6,000 acres of the 382,000-acre forest for target practice for 50 years under a special use permit from the US Forest Service.

You can go on Google Earth or any map site and see the range and targets. It's not hard to find.

All makes sense! Know for a fact that "up north" that where there are bases...and forests that the air-force does practice missions. If one happens to drive through these areas once in awhile there will be a "surprise" of planes flying low over the tree-tops.
Out west (for example in Nevada) there are bases and know that there are missions done out there as well. Glad that our servicemen have the freedom here to practice for the "what-if's"!!! |
