What would you do?

A retired couple in Mt. Dora was murdered recently by some one they let into their house. Lesson: If you can afford to do so, donate the furniture. The few bucks you might make selling it is not worth the risk of opening your door to a stranger.

All the responses were identical, so I was suspicious enough to research if they were scans. Don’t even accept Venmo or PayPal. There’s a way for them to take the money back doing that. Don’t give out your phone number or address. Keep your communication within the site you posted and have them meet you at a rec center or mailbox parking lot. I got so many of these scammers responses, that a few months ago, when I was selling furniture, I had the person meet me at the mailbox and then had them follow me to my house. If they showed up to the mailbox, I knew they were legitimate.

Please explain how a Zelle payment to you can be a scam. To me, a Zelle payment is equivalent to cash, the money won't transfer into your account if it wasn't in the sender's account and once you have the money it cannot be taken back. How does this become a scam?

They tell you they sent a Zelle payment and then claim it won't go thru because your account needs to be updated.

The e-mail will include a link to do this. It will look like a Zelle website, but the header will be wrong.

If you sign in, you'll be giving them your account info and password... Bye Bye money!

I was selling some musical equipment on e-Bay and I received no less than 5 of these scam attempts... I won't get into specifics about how I responded, but it was instructions on how to "self-copulate"... Oddly, I never heard back form them...

Rather than click on their link, I went to my Zelle app and all was fine.

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER respond to a link received by e-mail for any banking activity. Open a new window and go to the site YOU usually use. And problems will be listed there...

What would you do?

All the scams on FB marketplace and other sites begin with a long tale of why they can’t pick it up in person. The checks they mention aren’t going to clear.

Block them and move on

Ah, so it isn't an issue with Zelle, it's a social engineering attempt.

I can't remember how many times my M&T Bank account has been frozen. I would care more if I ever had an M&T account in the first place.

This is a well known scam. The check actually does clear but then is found to be fraudulent and the money is withdrawn. I hope you don't fall for this some day. They are always "out of town" and will have a relative come pick up the furniture, hence the need for a cashiers check.

ron32162 02-02-2023 09:20 AM

NO! OMG this has scam written all over it I have seen this response from buyers quite a few times. and a cashiers check can go thru the bank and funds be available for you but the bank can take the money back after it clears. just ask the bank

so easy to spot a scam, but people fall for them; especially seniors.

OhioBuckeye 02-02-2023 10:31 AM

I think you told them right considering how our world is going. Personally I would only accept cash too, to many dishonest people in our country. To bad we have to be this way but right now I would tell them to keep their cash & bring that instead of going to their bank & getting a check & tell them you’ll give them a written bill of sale! If they’re scammers they won’t want to do it that way, then you’ll know.

So "clear" doesn't mean "clear"? I don't think I have ever had a bank notify me in writing that a check I cashed has cleared.

Why trust cashier’s checks?

So it’s a scam, that much is obvious, but it raises the point: why ever take a cashier’s check? The cashiers check may not be worth the paper it’s printed on. Same as a regular check. I’ll take any paper you want to write, but until my bank says it’s done, you don’t get the goods.

I learned this lesson when I sold a house in The Villages—the “cashier’s check” for the furniture in this turnkey deal was held by the bank for over two weeks, and I was a nervous wreck by the time it actually did clear. Only $4,000, I think, but nobody wants to get ripped off!

I agree with you. I always thought Zelle, PayPal, and Venmo were same as cash. I use them in my business, but when the first 10 responses were demanding me to give them my Zelle account info and telling me to open a zelle since I told them I didn't have one, I Googled Zelle payment scam. I read many many posts researching it and I'll be damned if it wasn't a latest scam. Zelle is connected to your bank account, so that's the reason they want it so bad. I don't remember how it works, I just know that you don't use it with unknown people. I was also shocked to know they can swipe their money back from Venmo and Paypal.

All you give people is an email address.

They don't need any other bank information. The scammers try to fool you into thinking you have to give that to them...

As long as you don't give out extra info, you're safe. Just like in any other banking transaction. Remember, every time you write a check, you're giving out your Bank and Account#...

The scam with PayPal and collection of goods is that after payment and collection, the buyer claims 'goods not received.
As the seller cannot show proof of delivery, PP will refund buyer.
That's how it used to work, and be. System may have changed since.
When I sold my fishing gear, which was quite high value, I only accepted cash on collection.

If you send with "signature required", they cannot claim they never received the item...

Because there was nothing to figure out.
The subject was collection of goods, and scams of collections.
Nothing to do with sending goods with signed for postage.
