Default School Tax

The new Gov has been talking about cutting some taxes. I got a great idea that I think most Villagers would go for.

Eliminate the school tax for seniors!!!!!

I've been paying school taxes for 49 years and I'd like a reprive.

Cobb & Cherokee counties in Georgia eliminated school tax for seniors a number of years ago and they still have some darn good schools.

Sparky:

I lived in Woodstock, GA and my kids went to school in Cherokee Cty. GA. The school system is pretty good but they always seemed to be a little (sometimes a lot) behind catching up with the tremendous growth in the area. Keep in mind that Georgia has a state income tax that supports the school system. As you know, Florida imposes no income tax on residents. Money for schools must obviously come from somewhere...real estate tax, sales tax, corporate taxe, business impact fees etc. Another level of complexity arises from our area demographic in that the ratio of seniors to non-senior income earners is probably high (just a guess). I wonder how this ratio compares vis-a-vis Marion/Sumter/Lake counties v. Cherokee, Cobb/N. Forsyth counties in GA? That would be an interesting and perhaps telling metric to determine the feasibility of eliminating the "school tax" for seniors which would most likely come in the form of a reduction in real estate taxes. I don't think there is a "school tax" per se. Is there?

Default Re: School Tax

I just learned from my spiffy spouse that there is a "school tax" break-out as part of our property tax bill. It's easy to figure out who pays the bills around THIS hacienda! "School tax"....hmmmmm. I say we demonstrate ala 60's activist style. That's what it takes to change laws. A grassroots (ok...grey-roots) political ground swell of opposition. A sit-in maybe. Any ideas for protest-sign slogans? "If your grey, don't pay!" "No more pencils, no more books, no school taxes for old......ahhh, whatever rhymes with books!" Ohhhhh we could have fun with this. This is no time to be a lurker. Feedback people! POST!
