Here's the website if anyone wants to check out other restaurant inspection reports. After you get the list, you can click on the date and see a detailed report.

It's not a restaurant. I believe it comes under the Cottage Food law, and probably does not require inspections .I cannot vouch for the cleanliness of the place. Caveat emptor!!

What characteristics does a good one have?

If you Google NY Crumb Cake, you will see images of crumb cake. If I knew how to forward it or copy it I would, BUT not too computer savvy!! Sorry

Barnes & Noble cafe has the most delicious cakes and cookies. Their cakes are from Cheesecake Factory and are yummy.

Thanks, PapaLarry. That's what we called (genericly) coffee cake when we were kids. But no German in my family.

Now you've done it. On this coldish wettish day, I either write a nasty letter to Gary Morse that he allowed a cold, wet day to happen here, or I go down 466 to Publix and buy us a crumb cake.

Off to Publix.

That is great news about the Yalaha Bakery! I wonder if it will be at Brownwood.

They are not necessarily bad products, but they are not scratch made in the stores, as the grocery companies would like you to believe.

Thanks for confirming what I suspected. I remember watching a decorator at Publix one day take cakes out of a cardboard box and start to frost them. They were covered with cellophane. That's when I realized they were not fresh.

But they are still wonderful...and dense and full of flavor and freshly iced and not stale.

I think not fresh is inaccurate.

But I am not an expert like a lot of others. But I do love to cook.

AND I think Publix baked goods are yummy. Try their carrot cake and get back to me.

Yes!!!!!!! Thats Coffee Cake or Crumb Cake. Yummy Years ago, used to go to bakeries on sunday after church, and order a dozen crumb buns, wrapped in paper with string around package.

D&Lsunfun 04-21-2013 11:08 PM

most bakery cakes are bought frozen and iced at the store. just too costly to bake cakes at the store level. notice how many cakes that are on display and guess how many are thrown out after the sell by date. frozen is the new fresh!

The only thing Publix bakes on premises is their rolls. A friend of mine works at one of their stores as a bakery clerk and she said all the cakes are brought in frozen and thawed out. The frosting is made there but it too comes in in a huge cube that they add water and corn syrup to.

I don't care how they fix them. They are danged good.

I consider myself an expert in this field because I have baked a good many cakes in my life and love to bake and cook.

But more importantly, I have eaten a fair share too.

So whether they use heneggs as they say in Ohio, or giraffe eggs, whether they use the dreaded preservatives, whether they are bent stapled or mutilated, they are danged good cakes.

Hope you have one for your next Happy Birthday, Gocubsgo..whenever it is.

(Ask for the chocolate iced chocolate and put some nice Publix French Vanilla ice cream next to it)

I remember how loyal I used to be to Krogers.

I think it is the chip in my neck.:D:22yikes:

PapaLarry. You know I always like your posts, so please know this is a respectful question.

Does it really matter?

They are yummy and not too expensive.

They always taste fresh to us.

I used to watch my Italian grandmother bake, make macaroni, etc, on Sat. mornings when I was a child. That's where I got my inspiration to "go homemade" :-) My sister was a pastry chef on Nantucket and Boston area, and she also bakes still from scratch. Now that I no longer work and I have alot of time for myself, I really enjoy having fun baking, cooking AND best of all eating (in moderation of course) the fruit of my labor. Plus, my husband likes it alot better. I miss (big time) the Italian bakeries and Italian deli's that I to frequent in and around the Boston area, especially in the North End!!

Yes so true, but one time we bought carrot cake @ Sweetbay, that was 3/4 icing and 1/4 cake. So we told the manager, and he took us to the bakery, where the lady said to manager, we don't bake carrot cakes here. We just put the icing on them. One rectangler cake, we slice down, and make two cakes out of it, with icing between slices. We felt there was too much icing (which manager agreed) and not much cake. Thats the only time it would matter. I guess you go to the old saying, "Can't have your cake and eat it too" So now can order carrot cake with just icing on top. So that would make it more yummy!!! Another favorite cake besides crumb cake and carrot cake that is our favorite but hard to find, is an "Upside Down Pineapple cake" Love them!!! But yes, always seems fresh to us also

BACARDI RUM CAKE RECIPE

This is the cake , partially from scratch, but still delicious....that was all the rave back in the ‘80s and ‘90s.

I’d make it for our Christmas parties and New Year’s Eve parties all the time.................very easy to make.

I used the large tube pan.....

You can decorate it with whipped cream and grapes/berries......or just leave it plain. Nothing like a rum cake.

Make cake...drink the rum...who cares what the cake tastes like?!
