Normal for Florida. Look up the history of Paynes Prairie in Gainesville, once called Lake Alachua.

There are 14 lakes, YES, LAKES within 5 miles of the Villages. Many more in the surrounding areas. You should get out and explore some of them. Beautiful! Lake Sumter, Lake Miona, Lake Denham, Lake Deaton, Lake Okahumpka to name a few.

Lake Sumter is a man-made lake. Basically an oversized retention pond.

If you want to see some awesome lakes, rent a pontoon for a day, through Lake Griffin and the Dead River, Lake Harris, Lake Eustis, and Lake Dora.

From Google

“It may surprise you to know there is no technical difference between lakes and ponds, according to the National Park Service(Opens in a new window). However, a general rule of a thumb is if a body of water is large and deep it's a lake and if it's short and shallow it's a pond.Aug 8th.”
