since we are snowflakes and come and go when we want mostly in the spring and the fall. That way I don't think we can be counted as extra people in the winter

We have a place at the New Jersey shore. In the summer, everything is jam packed - just as TV is in the winter. In the summer, everything is open and busy. During the rest of the year. many of these places close or barely survive (like restaurants). It is comparable to retail sales in the holiday season. The income from the peak season is what attracts businesses. I would assume snowbirds in TV are similar to people at the beach in NJ in the summer. Yes, they don't all live there and most of them do indeed see themselves as on vacation. That is one of the major reasons they are willing to spend money. If there was no "peak season," I wonder how many of these businesses would simply close or never open in the first place. If there were no snowbirds, what would the impact be? I have heard that 20% to 40% of the homes in TV are filled with snowbirds. If that income went away, would it be worth the peace and quiet that exists during the other 9 months of the year?

We've only made one trip to TV so our experience is limited (we were ready to buy a home but it didn't work out - we'll find another). Having said that, we were very surprised at how many of the people we spoke with who live in TV also have or have had second or even third homes that they rent. Which side of the snowbird issue are you on if you both live and rent in TV?
|
snowbird issue makes me hesitate
I am a Wanna be.....The Villages may be in our future...But...talk of crowds noise crowded eating establishments and happiness that the snowbirds are leaving brings ......makes me hesitate in buying???
I can understand both sides of the issue {i think}.....if the villages is so busy of a place and so many are not happy......Do I really want to be there? I had hopes of a quiet peaceful safe place to live with the option to enjoy a lifestyle that i can enjoy......Sorry but all of the posts make me worried about making the wrong decision.... |

I have to ask.............what does the bfd of the bfdretired stand for???
|
Quote:
It means the people who rent a house don't follow rules, drink to excess, and have never driven in a roundabout. Those that rent their homes to others and those that rent those houses are less desirable neighbors. Generality at it's best. |

People already here at some point are going to want to sell their home, or they'll be dead and their heirs will want/need to sell it. Reducing or eliminating rentals would reduce drastically the number of buyers who actually know from experience what they want and where they want it and how much they need to pay for what they want. Eliminate rentals and you'll get "Geriatric Estates: Waiting to Die". And what 55-year-old couple about to retire wants to buy a home in a "waiting to die" town, as many here on TOTV described the other 55+ communities they checked out in FL and reviewed in another recent thread?? The only reasonable solution to the perceived problem of too many non-resident owners would be to pass an ordinance saying only up to ____% of the total number of homes can be rentals. |

Geesh, very fair and sensible statement about crowding. I see it's attack mode on TOTV again..... |
We (hubby & I) have lived here just over 8 months. Yes the restaurants and traffic are busier but I wouldn't have it any other way. I loved the seasonal neighbors, more dancers in the squares, and more opportunities to meet potential friends. Now the neighborhood is quiet, more open tee times ( but we didn't have trouble reserving times this winter), I love it here, I feel very safe and I find myself smiling more. To each their own.

VT2TV, we own our home (no mortgage) and are snowbirds. We never rent it out. We maintain it better than most homes around us. And we definitely aren't here on vacation. We live here and take pride in what we have and do in this great community. How do you classify us? Are we bad people and don't have as high standards as you. |

So I am an "extra" person? Thanks a lot.

Typically, I do not get into this type of discussion. I found it difficult to avoid when so many generalities were used by the original post. I understand this is/was their feelings on houses not owner occupied. The original post was the attack. The posts that followed, defended their feelings on being lumped into a negative group without facts. How can this not be taken personally? |

Wow! Lots of attitude.
I look at the high season as normal because, like other communities, the houses are all occupied, whether with owners or renters. Amenities are in high demand; golf course times are in short supply (shorter days with more players); restaurants have waiting lines. Truth is there are workarounds for all these. Go or sign up early for classes; be less choosy about course and time or accept that you may not play as many times per week as desired; eat at home more or earlier at restaurants. I consider the rest of the year as not normal. Many of my friends are not here. The overall energy in the community is lower. Clubs don't meet over the summer either because of the heat or fewer members present. Don't get me wrong, though. I do enjoy being able to decide to play golf and get a time on a desired course same day. I do enjoy quicker access to restaurants. We came here from San Diego where we had the visitors in the winter from colder climes, then the ones in the summer from Arizona escaping the heat. So it was year 'round. I like it here! |
It might be safe to say that the majority of us started out as "snowbirds", enjoying the vacation times here for some years, staying longer with each visit and then looking at making a change in our lives, selling the home and all that we had for many years, for some an easy choice and others very difficult. That snowbird that is renting a place in your neighborhood may very well be someone that will become a neighbor or a friend in the future in part by how they were treated by you, made to feel welcome no matter how long they rented, or shared a table in a busy restaurant, a bench in one of the Squares, or a golf partner when making reservations to play.
So, enjoy our time here for as long as we have......... |

Hi everyone.............I am a "snowbird......snowflake......homeowner..........g osh, I am not sure what I am! Anyway, even I am glad when the snowbirds go, and I AM ONE! I am from Connecticut but live mostly in The Villages. It does get hectic in the winter months here but this past year CT had horrible weather and we were really glad to be here.
I have made wonderful friends here and am thankful for this lifestyle. Even though I am somewhat of a snowbird I keep my home in great shape, keep the yard well manicured all year long and support the Villages Homeowners Association. |

Thanks for saying you recognize how things are less crowded when the seasonal residents are gone. I have NOTHING against any of the seasonal residents personally, I atually have some very, very good friends who are seasonal residents. I just have a problem with all the crowding and difficulty getting around TV during the fall, winter and spring---some times worse than others. |
While we are back home enjoying golf, boating and the beach take good care of all our amenities.
|
I do absolutely , this is now our vacation. The developer just's wants to keel expanding, all about profits I guess.
