There are a host of "checklists" as to what you do when leaving your residence, i.e. turn off main water, circuit breakers, appliances, etc. . Many hire home watch services - my service is Safe Home Watch - Ed and Mary Edwards PH: 1-352-603-5333.

Safe Home Watch provided a check list for us to use to close up the house before we departed.

My personal opinion would be to hire a professional home watch for while you are gone. Most charge by the visit - the exact price would be based on what you have them do as far as killing weeds, making sure your cart will operate on your return, pulling flyers from your door, picking up papers from your drive way, checking for leaks (indoors and outside), making sure your water traps for sinks and toilets remain filled, etc. The one we had would come into the house the day before our return and turn up the A/C, turn the water back on, etc to make sure the house was ready for us.

Most will send you an email after each visit to report on what they found, and if they find something out of order either call you and/or email pictures to show the severity of the problem. When we were snowbirds, I rested a lot easier knowing that we wouldn't return to find any significant problems.

If you use a home watch company, they will provide you with a checklist. They will also check on their first visit that everything has been done. We use Village Watchdogs.

Most are around $40+/- per month for once a week, Keith.
