We were using a Britta up north for drinking water, so we disregarded changing the filter in our LG French door fridge. After the filter apparently became clogged to capacity from filtering the water going into the ice maker, it simply stopped letting enough water go through, and we were getting a few cubes every couple of days.

I too wonder if the filter can be disabled in modern fridges if you install a whole house filter. For instance, the Whirlpool Gold French Door fridge (2012). I'm sure Whirlpool wouldn't tell me.

We have a water softener with filters and I have removed the filter from our Whirlpool fridge. The owners manual said that this acceptable.

Prior to installing the water softener I always used water from the fridge for cooking and drinking and for the dogs.

Mine has a toggle kinda button next to the indicator light that you have to push to reset it.

And yes, we did just pull ours out of our Whirlpool after we had the whole house filter installed. Lemme plug those for a minute...I got ours from Pagasus and it was fairly expensive...but worth every penny! I even have company remark on how shiny my utensils and dishes are...no film on anything. Not only does it improve the taste and feel of your water, it is definitely better for your appliances. I no longer use fabric softener, and find my soaps etc last longer.
