Suggestions on how to learn about the different communities in TV
My wife and I are nearing retirement and have visited numerous other active adult communities. My concern is with the size of the Villages how does one go about discerning the different communities. Does the visit allow time to see it all or will it take numerous visits. Thanks in advance for suggestions.

I would try to visit for a month if at all possible. Get a feel for what each section of the villages offer. Historic or lake side or western each area offers something fun! Best of luck. ..

Depends on both the neighbors and the renter
Maybe it depends on how old you are - if you are not yet retired, or can spend your next 3 vacations visiting or if you are already 65 or 68 and don't have time to waste.
I used to think that we were in the best location, right in the middle of everything, not too far from anywhere. But you know what? Once you move somewhere, you will start doing most things near where you live and some things not that near. All 3 squares and all outlying areas have restaurants. Dancing is basically everywhere. Golf is everywhere. Exercise stuff is everywhere. Quilting and most other crafts are everywhere. Cards and games are everywhere. Probably only really important if you do something intensely (like woodworking or maybe the radio operated flying things, or remote operated sailboats) that is only offered in one location, and likely to stay that way). There are probably a couple of others I haven't thought of. Concert band/orchestra stuff is mostly at Mulberry (north) or Laurel Manor (kind of in the middle), but could potentially move or be added further south. If I had plenty of time (i.e., not retired yet), would spend every vacation possible renting in different locations and seeing what I though. If I were already 65 or 68 or whatever, think I would come once and think hard and probably rent for a month where I think I wanted to live (and in the type home I think I might want) and probably buy on that rental visit. You could visit retirement communities forever, or look in The Villages forever, but you know what? You don't have forever, so just get on with it. Might also depend on your budget. |

We came in May and did the lifestyle preview by Sumter Landing. We looked at house in the Spanish Spring area and ended up buying in Lake Denton because we decided we wanted a new neighborhood. We love our choice. The Villages is big but you can get from one end to the other in 30 minutes which is nothing compared to what we had to travel before we came here. There really isn't a bad area in The Villages.

There are a number of different homes and they are repeated all over the town and in most villages. There are patio villas and cottages, then a little bigger are several different designers and the biggest are premier models.
I think figuring out what size home you want is the first thing to do. (Many of us have changed our minds once we get here) I spent a lot of time on The Villages site. The general thing to remember is that the farthest Northeast are the oldest homes and they become newer gradually as you go south. Most designers range from about 1500 sq ft to about 2000. Villas and cottages are a bit smaller and premier homes are a bit bigger. Most people really find a golf cart garage is great to have and remember that garage space is important because it functions a lot like a basement, "back home". Good for storage. Some people don't mind their back lanai facing another's back lanai's and those lots are usually the most affordable. Anything with rear privacy, even a road will cost more and golf and water views are the most expensive. Just something for you to digest. Wishing you well. You will love it here.

We visited in May ... when rents went down and the weather was warm and not too rainy. We rented a 2 bedroom villa (in the center of the villages) that came with a golf cart. We felt like Villagers a bit. We went to a ton of open houses almost every day ... we got to see different villages and different floor plans. We started with a budget and had a very short lust if "needs" ... price range with a golf cart garage. We visited each town square multiple times. We decided on a new house because we wanted to have neighbors who were just getting established also.
Everyone has a different story but the everyone is always happy with their choice. Good luck, enjoy the moment and make some happy memories every day.

a very short list of "needs" in the above. The keys are too small. lol Gary

Gary, I liked lust better he he. I agree with Ohio girl. I do a lot of things near home for convenience but think nothing of traveling to any part of the Villages. It is not that far. My addition to the list of needs are an enlarged lanai, and a patio if available. At least get a home with room to add a patio on. Closets, as many as you can get and garage space are very desirable. The only differences between the different villages is location, not a biggie in my estimation, and the approximate age of the other neighbors. The older section residents tend to be a bit older, but, younger people are moving in also. The hospital is centrally located, as are the doctors. Restaurants and NAIL SALONS are everywhere. IMHO. Worry more about getting the house you desire than the location.

We visited and rented in TV four years prior to purchasing in August. We also had some friends that lived here for relatively long time and had lots of discussions with them as well. We found a great sales guy (Jim McLaughlin) who followed our needs rather than try and push us in a direction. After all those gyrations we narrowed it down to a couple things...new neighborhood so we could establish our neighborhood culture with other newbies, not having neighbors tight behind us and a house that was not buried deep into a community (easy access in and out). Working on that short list made the selection pretty easy.......you can become overwhelmed with choices so keep it simple.

My brother told me to buy anything within reason, of course. He said you can't make a bad decision down here because the prices keep going up. A year later, I think he was right.
I have also run into so many people that claim their neighborhhod is the best neighborhood. Who can argue with that kind of happiness? I think it's like picking out a college and not getting accepted by your first pick. Many people end up with their second choice but interestingly enough down the road those same people feel lucky. The back up school was a better fit for them. I know this advice is not for everyone and more often then not I'm the "look and wait" type. |

My advise would be to rent somewhere around Sumter Landing. It really is about in the middle. You're close to Sumter Landing Square and the other 2 squares are each about the same distance from there. Sumter is also a very busy square where you can meet and talk to a lot of people and get a lot of good information.
The area you might be interested in would really depend on if you wanted a new home or a resale. Everything on here is great advice. It would definitely be good if you could at least come for 2 weeks. That way you have time to look and time to play !! If you don't get the Daily Sun delivered to you, you may want to look into that. There's a lot of good info about the restaurants, activities & entertainment that we have. What ever you do, have a blast !!!
