Yes... absolutely. GPS units are not affected by tire and wheel sizes and are very accurate!

Thanks, I found that my rental cart will go 27 miles an hour down-hill. Guess I better slow down a bit, huh? LOL

I just came from a District 6 meeting at which the Sumter County Sherriff’s Dept. presented the golf cart citations issued between Aug 11th and Oct 11th. There were 64 citations in all, 9 for Ran Stop Sign, 1 for Possession of Open Container – Driver, and 56 for No Motor Vehicle Registration. The No Motor Vehicle Registration meant that the non-street legal golf cart was operated in excess of 20mph while on public road – path portion or otherwise. The citation requires a court appearance. In general, offenders are required to demonstrate to the judge that repairs have been made to limit the cart’s speed to 20mph and pay court costs of $250. At the judge’s discretion, the several hundred dollar fine is waived.

Drive safely

Nah, drive faster. That way you can tell us all where the police hide out when they're clocking carts!! :1rotfl:

As Ooper said, the GPS is going to be spot-on accurate. I've checked our various cars' speedometer readings with one. Some of them are waaaay off!!

GPS Speedometer question: I assume it is distance traveled/time? In other words it's not distance between two points (straight line) divided by time? Obviously nothing in tv is distance straight line with all those tunnels and curvy paths.

Does anyone know how it's calculated?

Bill-n-Brillo 10-24-2010 10:24 AM

Russ - This explains it in pretty straightforward terms:

Hope that helps!

I copied this from a public forum:

I think you're correct to favor the GPS device's speed reading. Speedometers are often inaccurate by one to three miles an hour for a number of reasons ranging from tire size and wear to irregular calibration at the factory. The indicated speed is usually higher than the car's actual speed. Industry officials have said speedometers are set "optimistically" to give drivers an inflated sense of speed (and help them avoid tickets). GPS devices record distance over time without the effects of mechanical variables and thus tend to be more accurate.

Thanks,

Speedometer apps must be really accurate.

I did get a ticket and paid it. Do not use a lawyer they can do nothing for you I know. Your cart does not have to be upgraded. Just add bigger tires and you are there over the limit. If these people that are glad about people getting ticket just stop and think about it. We know very little about the crime in The Villages as the Daily Sun doesn't report any unless they have to after it is out in public.

We know very little about golf cart accidents in The Villages. If you think it will be safer for you or anyone when all the 200+ ticketed people get their light electrical vehicles and can go 25 MPH all the time including on the separate Golf Cart Paths good luck with that one. And that is correct 200+ and counting. When I was in court my lawyer said the Sumter County DA had 90 the week before mine and 80+ the week I was there so I am sure their were more before and after those weeks.

Maybe we need a new sheriff.

much safer. Excuse me, but the only thing I see accomplished is about $14,000 in the county coffer's. It didn't rid us of the underage driver's, the people with small children on their laps while driving, the towels covering the rear tail lights, too many bodies in a 2 passenger cart, failing to signal turns, turning left from the far right hand lane and on and on. The reason I am so cynical is due to the police power being used while we continue to see homes being burglarized, articles being stolen from carts in broad daylight, autos left in driveways in the evening being broken into, golf courses being vandalized, etc. Those of you who get so worked up at carts passing you, probably fear they will get an open parking spot at the square, or, worse yet, a chair at the square that you might have gotten if the line of carts would just stay behind you. You are the cart going 16 mph, but you are safer??? Maybe they just had to get to the 2 for 1 before it closed. Sorry, I do not see carts that go 5 mph over the speed limit as a major problem, nor the value in the appropriation of police manpower.

Oh ! As much as I agree with you I am sure you are going to be slammed for dissagreeing with the majority !!!:boxing2:

I looked back through the thread to see if you had posted details on your ticket. Would you mind sharing some? How fast? Where? etc.? I hear lots of rumors, but am always interested in some first hand information if you feel like sharing.....

Golf Carts and LSVs

I just purchased a LSV and no one seemed to know the real rules, not even the dealer!

Would be nice if The Villages printed a book on purchasing golf carts and LSVs, the do's and dont's and the rules of the road in The Villages, FL on golf multi use vehicle and jogging paths.

I keep hearing about meetings but never seem to see any notice about them.

Every day I see golf carts drving in excess of 20 mph, people sitting in them and driving in them drinking alcohol, folks paying no attention to the rules of the road...so I am thinking The Villages needs to post fome information on the purchase and use of golf carts and LSVs as well as a map of the roads for those vehicles...smiles and frowns...Bob Busby

I don't think it is The Villages responsibility to print a booklet of rules... it is the county or state. You don't see The Villages putting out a book of how to drive a car. It's not a The VIllages law. Talk to your state or county representatives!

The Villages Homeowner's Association (VHA) sponsors a Golf Cart Safety Clinic. It is usually held the third Wednesday of the month from 10AM to 11:30AM at the Savannah Center. They usually have various specialists (police officers, insurance agents, etc.) at the meeting to give a quick speech and answer any questions.
