George - please post some links that indicate that the E-pass (or Sunpass) is good outside of Florida. I couldn't find any. Here in Mass we use Fast-Lane/EZ-Pass. I think you are confusing E-Pass with EZ-Pass which is good on most of the east coast and northeast. See here for a description: http://www.massdot.state.ma.us/Highw...ane/faq.aspx#1

The Sunpass Florida transponder works on all Florida toll roads that are marked as either Sunpass or E-Pass and all monies come out of the same linked account. Very seamless.

Christa Deason, Florida Turnpike Commission.

"Florida customers haven't indicated much of an interest in making the SunPass system compatible with other states. And eventually, all electronic toll collection technology will become "interoperable," probably within the next decade."

I'm sorry, I was mistaken. I confused e-pass with ez-pass. Thanks Russ and TH for catching that.

Red:

Things have changed since you left the Bay Area - we now have FasTrak transponders for the numerous bridge tolls ($7 for Golden Gate Br, $5 for the other 7 bridges - they were 40 cents in the early 70's). Wonder if FasTrak transponders will work in Fla???

Default EZ Pass doesn't work in FL

What timing! Was disappointed last week when my NJ EZ-Pass didn't work in FL. http://www.ezpassnj.com/static/info/facilities.shtml

Have had it for maybe 10 years and used it up and down the East coast, was surprised it didn't work in FL. So now I will need to have BOTH transponders for FL and East coast as I plan to drive to NJ/NY once a year. Anyone who has driven through those tolls, knows the high COST especially on the NJ Turnpike and crossing bridges (almost $50 roundtrip from NJ to MD). Boo hoo, but on the bright side, don't have any tolls nor meters to worry about in The Villages.....another plus for living in TV.

We just purchased our Sunpass today and will activate it tonight. We have to go to Richmond, VA later this month. How soon after you go through the toll booth will it be before you can see if you were charged for going thru? Also, does anyone know if you will be charged automatically even though you go through the Exact Change lane? If not, I guess I'll find out later this month.

I may be wrong but there are no tolls from TV to VA. Your Sun Pass is only good in Fl. Tolls go crazy north of Richmond

Do not go through the exact change lane without depositing money. Your pass works on marked lanes only. At least that is my understanding.

Why would you want to wait in line anyway when you can just pass right through (sometimes at 65 mph)?

I'm talking about in and around Richmond, VA. I don't want to risk being ticketed for bypassing the toll booth. If the SunPass isn't going to work in VA, I have to go through the exact change lane. I definitely won't try to go through them without paying.

Cool Sometimes, stuff happens

Last trip to TV, I ended up in the wrong lane on the tollway...Sunpass only lane. Once you're there, there isn't much you can do, so I went on through. I was in a rental car, so when I got back to Germany, I saw an extra $7.00 charge on my bill for the toll I missed. Bet it happens alot, with travelers who are not used to our toll systems... Rental car companies probably get a volume discount ...

Aren't the SunPass lanes 25MPH? I know there is a trooper usually sitting near the gate on the FL turnpike looking for speeders. (last toll going north)

If you google "does the sunpass work at ezpass tolls" you will find that the answer is NO. You still need an ezpass around richmond.

That's what I thought, but when jarring made that original post, I had to start wondering. Thanks. Ain't Google wonderful? I didn't think of googling a question. That's usually done on ask.com.

The new and re-built roads have an arch over the 3 main lanes for sunpass/epass users, who go through at the ordinary posted speed (60/65/70mph). Only if you need to pay cash do you go to the right to go through toll booths. You pass under one on the way to Orlando airport. That's the way they plan to do all of the new toll collection points in Florida. Pretty nifty. (And no, you can't use your EZpass from up north. Florida decided to have their own system.)
