The Outerbanks has always been on our short list. But taxes, NC leadership and healthcare (or lack thereof) are concerns.

In Florida: Anna Maria Island (if we could afford it...). St George Island also looks tempting.

We will be checking out: Latitude Margaritaville Daytona Beach and also the location being built near Panama City. I've been told Top of the World is nice. From everything I've been able to gather, you get a lot of bang for your buck with The Villages which is why it is a top choice.

Now that is subtle humor!

We moved to The Villages from the Portland area after living there for 45 years.

If it wasn't to here, we definitely would have found some place else in Florida, but not as nice. Sarasota area was on the list.

Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee were also on the list, but we no longer needed winter. If we wanted snow, there are plenty of areas to visit for a week.

Australia and New Zealand were also on the list, but to far from family.

Australia and New Zealand wishful thinking nearly impossible to live their permanently. Many, many restrictions on who they allow in.

If there were no Villages

I would have stayed put. On an Island where wild horses roam, the Gulf Stream bringing in the catch of the day and a private field in our the back yard from which to fly my plane. The Outer Banks of North Carolina.
I like THE VILLAGES BETTER!

I would have stayed in Dunedin<FL where I lived for 41 years

IndianaJones 09-06-2020 10:39 AM

Costa Rica - have friends there, great medical care, amazing beaches, about 1/3 the cost of living here. Still might go...

Betty Wagner 09-06-2020 10:45 AM

Would have and may go to On Top of the World.

NavyVet 09-06-2020 11:04 AM

Before we heard of TV, we checked out several areas in central FL, Ocala, Mount Dora, Clermont, Eustis. We visited On Top of the World and they wouldn't even let us LOOK at the community or homes as we were not yet 55. If I am ever able to leave TV, I would probably move closer to a military base with commissary, PX/NEX, etc. maybe Jacksonville area. I'll never leave Florida. VA benefits are too good.

Top of the World, Ocala

Probably, Sun city in Tampa or Sun City Hilton Head or on top of the world or Citrus Hills.

Parnell 09-06-2020 12:15 PM

Nowhere.

I never thought about moving until I saw the Villages. I hated the thought of moving to Florida until I saw this place.

We’re too old to worry about hurricanes, so we’d head for another retirement community in Central Florida. Plus no coastal living for us. We stopped beach going 15 years ago - love to swim in a big, beautiful swimming pool!

We checked out retiring in North and South Carolina, and other retirement communities in Florida - it was no contest. The Villages won out big time. We love living here in our courtyard villa with our two doxies❗️🥰 And we don’t even play golf.

Pommom91 09-06-2020 01:30 PM

Would still be in Michigan.

Never heard of it before your mentioning it. Do you regret your not choosing Citrus Hills? What do you like about it.

We were very very close to moving to The Lakes of Mount Dora. Love quaint Mount Dora which is arty farty.
Glad we are not that far from it!

jojo 09-06-2020 04:22 PM

Venice FL. My parents wintered there and I looked at real estate there for 25 years before we happily discovered The Villages.

Where Would You Live

Probably someplace on the ocean side of south Florida.

nick demis 09-07-2020 05:04 AM

Either Margaritaville or the island of Curacao.

terenceanne 09-07-2020 06:10 AM

We had a laundry list of retirement places starting around North Carolina and heading South. After a couple of trips to TV we bought as nothing else compares. If you can afford it rent before you buy elsewhere as the grass is always greener.

Did not look a lot before moving here last year, but if rec center activities and entertainment dont open up soon, will definitely be looking.

GreySkies 09-07-2020 08:34 AM

Since retiring early and no hurry to sell my current home or make a permanent move to an active adult co9mmunity I have taken some time to rent or stay with friends in a few active adult communities I have been considering including Margaritaville, Citrus Hills and On Top of The World. In all the communities I have been considering I have spent a minimum of 6 months in each. I left The Villages (TV) as the final option since it’s the largest and I figured it will take the longest time to get an accurate feeling of the community, so I have a year lease.
Although I have only been in TV for a couple of months, I am not overly optimistic at this point if TV will be my final choice, reasons I will save for another discussion.

If there was no TV, from the three communities I have been to so far, neither of them I would consider as a permanent place to call home, I would just stay where I am today and travel whenever I wanted.

I moved here almost a year and I am less sure now than ever. I may have stayed in the Midwest not far from st louis. I went to lake miona pool the other day and the walkers were nasty asking the staff to call the police be abuse someone was swimming in their area??? They proceeded to throw water on his clothes on the deck. No it was not mine but I had trouble understanding this behavior and did not see it here before anywhere. It makes me sad.

I hope you find a friendly area, there used to be one here I've heard

Smarlow55 09-07-2020 09:53 AM

There is a brand new Villages like community in southern Spain called Ambera which looks amazing. I would go there for sure. It’s like the beginning of TV and well it’s SPAIN!
