Usually white is heat stage 1 if you have a heat pump it will be different.

My home is less than 3 years old and has the 24VAC common wire. Because of the problems, NEST technical support had me disconnect it, which didn't fix the problem. I ended up with the Honeywell 8000 with humidity control, and that has been working fine.
