Morse Blvd and Buena Vista are often like race tracks. On the straight aways people let it rip. We are doing 30-35 and being left in the dust. Where are the police? These are the main thorough fares in a RETIREMENT COMMUNITY! Why???

This stretch of road has alot of access points to shopping, services, restaurants, etc. At any time a car, cart, bike, wheelchair, pedestrian, animal and on and on can enter your path unexpectedly, and you have a much greater chance of avoiding a collision if you are travelling at the speed limit of 20mph.

I'm definitely guilty of going 25 mph on Bichara and often get tailgated. But you are correct. There's a lot of access points. And too many people think each one is a four-way stop when it is not.

I've have had several close calls. And that's likely the reason for the slow speed limit, and why the electronic warning sign was up on that road for several months earlier this year.

I think the problem is it is so selective or arbitrary. I just got back from driving to Maine and back and drove anywhere from 5 to 15 mph over limit the entire way, going with flow of traffic. I saw a handful of drivers pulled over during the trip and wondered how they ended up with the short straw. I know resources are limited but if speeding in Villages or on highway is a priority put on a full court press. If you are the one out of 10,000 I do understand someone feeling singled out. To those with no empathy for that I wish you no bad luck but you should get a turn.

If speeding and caught I have no excuse and will pay the ticket. I have done so in the distant past. My bad.

Good explanation.

LONG before The Villages came to fruition it was well known of a little town in Central Florida called Lady Lake that had the MOST aggressive speed trap in the state.(every trucker knew of this!))(before the turnpike came long) This is why they have nice muscle cars! Charger, Camaro, Mustang etc..my analogy is such as this. The US carrier Indianapolis is The Villages.. the survivors in the water are The Villagers ..and the sharks are the aggressive Lady Lake PD speed traps. I have addressed this in another post.. I sit at highway 25 by the Vet office Blatantly eating donuts! and watch the speeders come down the hill in a 35 mph ( remember gravity doesn't discriminate for anyone or anything) and every day BAMN! the blue light special turns on!! I so do wish to start a viral video of this aggressive milking taxation of those who are known to be the top 5% mentality! ( call it what it is!)..Blatant aggressive driving I understand!! nail them!! but radar speed traps in 5 areas-- Rolling Acres road , Bichara Blvd, Highway 25 by the Racetrack, and coming in from the south the moment you hit Lady Lake ,, speed trap by Oakwood etc every day. gets to be a bit much for it seems to be all they have to do..obtain revenue thru speed traps--- Remember! just don't ask the officer if he is Kevin Thompson as you spit donut crumbs at the PO PO .. big mistake , you will find yourself with more that a ticket! get beat down and dragged off to jail!!!! for those of you that wish to know if I did this I plead the fifth!! the punishment does not fit the crime IMO one mile over and you are ticketed HERE!! been that way for decades, but they don't tell you that do they when you come here.

Good explanation.

. many entry points, and don't forget the shady Oaks that darken that part of the road Bichara Blvd . then how come No red lights to allow safer entrance in and out of those many entry points? wouldn't that help? many MVA"s are there! golf carts and cars and dark streets and multiple entry points... yet no traffic lights installed for safety (yet). is it more important to have speed traps than traffic lights? or even speed bumps so we can spill our coffee!! its all about the Revenue thru tickets!! Argh!! crash thump...Martha call 911!! I'm ok I.m ok!!

I remember in the not too distant past that people did not act disrespectful of Law Enforcement Officers. Now folks think they are cute doing it. Pig socks???

Most people who are beat down and dragged off to jail did something that damn sure should not have done.

MOST people who live here are law abiding and law respecting and I am not going to sit here quietly especially since I have NOT had my coffee yet this morning and not say something about this very disrespectful post.

There are bad apples in law enforcement, granted, but recently it is "cute" to say nasty things about police officers and that makes me furious.

speeding tickets

Be very aware of the 20 MPH on 466 during school hours with lights flashing. I was stopped for doing 27 and was slowing , fortunatly for me I only received a friendly warning. The police are watching!!

go the speed limit and these 6 pages of repetitive nonsense plus the other thread are moot.

In NY

In NY most police go by "eight you skate, nine your mine". so don't go over 8 MPH of the speed limits. :a040:

I would be curious as to;

1. Where you heard this.
2. Whether it is just some LEO's personal opinion.
3. Any documentation that NY police, even most of them, think or apply the same.

And is that for ANY posted speed, or just the interstates/freeways/toll roads...or say speeds above +-60 mph?

To sum up this entire thread, the OP felt that a ticket for going "only 6 mph" over a very low posted speed limit...was somehow unfair.

By most of the responses, I don't think the hoped for empathy emerged.

KennyP 09-05-2016 09:21 AM

85% of all people speed (true statistic) Getting a ticket is part of driving. You take your chance, if you get a ticket you chalk it up as part of driving

At least you were able to read and comprehend that post without getting a headache. I gave up after 4 "sentences" (and I use that term loosely.).

I agree that 20 MPH is too low and 25 would be much more appropriate. In Michigan a while back, the City of East Lansing had a 25 MPH limit on a major state road that runs right through the downtown ( divided, 4 lanes). The State Police took them to court and won getting the speed limit raised to 35 as the judge concluded the 25 MPH limit was simply there for a "revenue enhancement" speed trap.

And a Judge who publicly states that he will ALWAYS only believe the LEO, is not a judge but a closed minded person who does not seem to understand the role of a Judge is to listen to BOTH sides without bias.

finally someone gets it :a040:

BobnBev 09-05-2016 01:45 PM

I used to give them 10 over, maybe a warning, maybe nothing-----all about the attitude.

Over 10, normally a ticket, with exceptions, of course.:police::police:

Sandtrap328 09-05-2016 04:18 PM

I saw that the OP also had a thread regarding a type of holster for his CCW.

I would suggest being extremely careful in driving at the posted speed if you are carrying. We sure would not want to be short any great band members due to a police misunderstanding.

I don't know who has that authority here but...Indirectly, the Florida legislature determined what our speed limits would be by allowing street legal golf carts on roads with no higher than 35MPH speed limit and allowing regular golf carts on roads with 25MPH limits. As long as that statute doesn't change, don't expect the speed limits in The Villages to increase.

Traffic lights in those entrances/exits would cause a pretty big backup out onto 441.

The issue is how much faster than the posted speed a vehicle is going and the only way to make a common sense equivalency comparison...is by using percentages.

Someone's personal opinion on safety...has absolutely nothing to do with it.

Almost any modern vehicle with a competent driver on an interstate/toll road is perfectly 'safe'...at 84 mph.

The same goes for drivers exceeding the speed limit by 30% on roads posted at say 35/40/45/50 mph. It's not about 'safety'...it's about exceeding the speed limit.

Or do you think those that exceed by 'only 6mph' in a 10 mph zone, should be given a pass also...even though they are exceeding the posted limit by 60%?

The bottom line is that your wife exceeded the posted speed limit by 30%...and shouldn't be complaining about being cited IMHO.

If it's not about safety but about exceeding the speed limit, what is the purpose of a speed limit?

No one follows the letter of the law 100% of the time. In most cases, as long as you are not doing anything to endanger the lives and safety of the public, law enforcement is not going to bother harassing you.

I agree, she was exceeding the speed limit and should have been stopped. But she's never had any kind of violation before and could have been issued a warning. The police have records of violations and warnings given out. When the officer looked up her record he might have considered giving her a warning. He didn't. that's his call, but I don't have to agree with it.
