Default Trane AC Units

I have been a resident for 3 years and during a normal maintenance of my AC unit by an outside company discovered, after taking off the cover of the handler in the garage, that the coils were literally covered in rust. So much so I called the installer of my unit Munn's and scheduled an appointment. The normal warranty on the unit is five years;however, that only includes parts. The home owner pays labor. Anyone else find the same problem with coils?

Gat,

I recall reading about a rash of Trane A/C coil problems for units installed in the 2004-2006 time frame. There were implications of a bad batch of coils that would freeze up and/or leak. It sure sounded like an issue with defective parts. It would be worth it to press Munns and Trane on the issue and perhaps see if the Villages Warranty Dept can give you any assistance. If this is a documented defect, perhaps they will cover the entire repair.

I first learned of this a couple of years ago on the Virginia Trace website (many of these homes were built during this problem phase). That motivated me to pay the $600 for the extended 10 year parts and labor warranty.

Good Luck.

Gat... you're welcome;

Another thought.... I was reading some of the prior posts on TOTV (do a forum search on TRANE); someone with a similar problem negotiated with Munns to buy the warranty as part of the repair and then they waived the labor for the coil repair. So, it might cost you about $600 for the 10 yr warranty (dating back to when home was built) but you avoid the $300-$400 labor for this one repair and have coverage for 7 more years.

Default Trane Usually Pretty Good

I had a Trane furnace completely replaced a few years ago at our home near Chicago when it was discovered that the heat exchanger was cracked. The furnace was about seven years old and well out of the normal warranty period. My installation dealer leaned on Trane a bit and they authorized the installation of a new furnace. As I recall, I paid the installation charge of a couple hundred bucks, but they provided a brand new furnace.
