Default TV Has Florida’s Lowest Crime Rate

Excerpts from an article in the May 29 Daily Sun:

"The crime rate in The Villages, expressed as total crimes per 100,000 population, is 1,058, according to FBI statistics for 2018, the latest numbers available. That's the smallest of any census-designated metropolitan statistical area (MSA) in the state. The Villages MSA includes all of Sumter County, including areas not in The Villages, but not parts of The Villages in Lake or Marion counties, which are part of other MSAs."

"The crime rate is obtained by adding the crimes per 100,000 population in seven categories: murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny-theft and motor vehicle theft."

"The area with the second-lowest crime rate in the state, according to the FBI, was the Punta Gorda MSA, with a rate of 1,324.2. Third was the Naples-Marco Island MSA at 1,351.4. The MSA with the worst crime rate in the state was Tallahassee, with 3,866.5."

Hey, this is good news, but no mention on this forum.

[sarcasm on] Imaging how difficult it is for the online news site to maintain a steady stream of mug shots and stories about bad boys and bad girls. [sarcasm off]

Considering that most residents are packing I assume the bad guys know that and stay away.

So ... "The Villages" is actually "Sumter County."

At any rate, I feel very safe here. Drunk driving Villagers are probably the biggest threat to others. The majority of assaults are angry spouses throwing household items at each other. Drug or shoplifting arrests (primarily non-Villagers, tbh) pose no immediate danger to me. Unless registered sex offenders have a history of attacking 65+ year old women, I'm not fussed about their proximity, either.

The local online news scrapes police blotters for all arrests to plump up their article count, but it's super easy not to click those links.
