why not be armed ? many make the choice between survival & prey/sheep,,, our whole age group is called 'target' by law enforcement,,, any usual edc weapon would be ineffective against bears but would certainly sting & greatly **** off the animal

Better to carry a camera and a few apples. Unless you corner a black bear or get between a sow and her cubs, the bear will be harmless. I've had many bears in my yard in Vermont. They would come around April and stay till mid September. Always looking for sunflower seeds from my bird feeders. One year it was a mom and three cubs that came around every evening for six months. It was fun to watch them climb the trees and chase each other around, sometimes for an hour and a half. Sometimes I would sneak around the corner of the cabin and roll a few apples at them.
Bears can't see all that well, but can certainly smell exceptionally well.
BTW ... I always had a bear tag with my hunting license, but never shot one.
AND they do taste pretty darn good......in stews or chilli. I'm just too lazy to skin and butcher one for food. I'd rather watch them.

Bear in backyard

Oh brother. Go out armed huh. You would do better with an apple to toss to it. And bears don’t want your fur baby, coyotes do.

10 Things You May Not Know About Davy Crockett - HISTORY

A little trivia about a famous bear hunter-- Davy Crockett.

I think you would need something as powerful as an elephant gun to take down a bear though.

Also - if it's a Florida Black Bear, reconsider walking your dog armed to protect against it. First of all - it lives on an 80% vegetarian diet. It's not all that interested in meat. Second, and more importantly, it is protected by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. It is illegal to kill them.

If you come across a bear, either be completely still, or make a LOT of loud clanging obnoxious noise to scare it away. Take that big AR-15 of yours and bang it against the sidewalk, instead of shooting it. It'll get the bear to leave you alone, and it'll keep you out of jail.

Part of your post is correct, including their dietary preferences, however, you have the right of survival if attacked and killing them in self defense is not a chargeable offense. They are not known to be aggressive, however I wouldn't take that as a reason not to be armed. There are limited hunting permits each year for them in the Central BMU. They vary in size from around 300 lbs to max at 700 lbs. Personally, I wouldn't shoot one unless they charged. I would however notify authorities to let them know where the encounter took place and describe the encounter and let them decide the action to be taken.

Bull! My man is a REAL man , he carries and I know he can protect us both in many situations!

How about real women? Do they, when faced with a 250lb attacker? How about that guy when attacked by a bear? Or should he just fight the bear hand to paw?

Toss an apple and you have see that bear every night.

How about just using bear repellant? My son does that on Vancouver Island, where he lives. He always has bear repellant with him when outdoors. I think it's actually pepper spray.

They lose their fear of people because dumbnuts feed them, or attack because some people just have to agrevate them.
The saying goes 'a fed bear is a dead bear.'
In urban areas scare them off on sight, make them fear you.
