I thought this thread was going to describe the more blantant attack on our democracy—the arrest and indictment of the two new Sumter County commissioners elected in 2020. They had campaigned on an anti-Developer platform centered on the reversal of the 25% increase in county property taxes and were elected in a landslide.

Their election reversed control of the county commission from one aligned with anything the Developer proposed to an independent body representing the residents and taxpayers in the county. The Developer had funded huge campaigns for their opponents, but the will of the voters was heard.

The new commissioners have done as they promised and taken the steps necessary to reverse the tax increase, opposed using every means by the Developer. In addition they have voted to resist Developer proposals to build large apartments throughout The Villages.

But now “someone” has filed a trumped-up complaint against the two newly-elected commissioners—they had phone conversations regarding county business but denied the calls to county investigators. They have been indicted for third degree perjury, a felony.

State law says that the Governor can replace local officials who face criminal charges. So watch for the two duly-elected commissioners replacement by the Governor. The Developer is a major campaign contributor to the Governor, so look for the replacement of the two new, duly-elected commissioners with people friendly to the Developer’s proposals. Expect your property taxes to take a major increase. And watch for a reversal of decisions rejecting construction of rental apartments throughout The Villages.

The Sumter County Commission will soon be returned to being lackeys to the Developer, as it has been for many years. This “complaint” against the two new commissioners is the most blantant attack on our local democracy, unimaginable really. In the short time since the election, the Developer has exerted its considerable financial resources to overturn the votes of Sumter County voters. Your vote meant nothing!

That’s the story I thought would be discussed in this thread.

Now we are starting down the conspiracy theory path that lots of dead people voted. There was at least one, and he was a conservative who voted for his dead wife.

I don’t understand why people are so uptight about Colbert having a little fun at the expense of the villages way of life , for as long as I can remember comedians have gotten laughs about senior citizens living in Florida ,it’s didn’t just start with the villages.I also think rightly or wrongly that we receive a little more interest when bumper stickers start appearing the day after an election for another one in 4 years

Unfortunately, at least two threads were recently started, that I am aware of, relating to that topic. Both of those threads rapidly disappeared. Kind of makes you wonder, a thread about absolutely nothing lasts seemingly forever, but a very important thread about relevant events effecting all Villages homeowners gets nixed in a heartbeat, hmmmmmm?

Good to know the only place cheating happens in TV.

According to the website: Voter Fraud Map: Election Fraud Database | The Heritage Foundation there have been 1334 documented cases of voter fraud going back almost 20 years and so far 1147 have been convicted.

You can look at the whole list or by state.

If you search a year and or state under the case is a drop down it describes the crime and in many cases reveals the persons registered affiliation.

Interesting is another Forum post 2 days ago about the 3 Villagers indicted for voter fraud....yes they were indicted was "closed" by the moderators after only 5 posts.
Yet there were several hundred posts about Ed McGinty, and that forum is still open.
Seems the people with their finger on the switch are not willing to allow posts that are critical of one but censure posts critical of 3.
I'll let the intelligent Villager read between the lines to determine what topic ties Ed with the other 3:lipsrsealed:.

I wondered why there was no mention of it. Didn't see the others. However while you and many others here might find it hard to believe there was no intention of this being a political thread and I guess I should have known better.. I just found the bit quite funny about The Villages riff on the show I mentioned. I keep forgetting where I live. I am used to just people being able to laugh at themselves when they see how others see us.

I have requested this thread be closed as well. It's so sad but when folks get older, the second thing to go is their sense of humor and the inability to look in the mirror and laugh at themselves.

Their duplicate votes were not counted because the system worked as it is supposed to. . The latenight folks have been having a blast with it. Sadly another black mark for The Villages despite it was only 3 who got caught. Colbert's show Wed night monologue had a couple minutes on "life in The Villages." Funny and sad but true.

This is a black mark only if you believe it. Three out of 135,000.

I am going to take a chance here with a segue to a suggestion for something to read.

If you are open to taking the time to read something that might cause long, hard thinking, may I suggest doing a search, a Google, with the words — “The Atlantic January 2022.”

If you do this, the chilling cover of the issue will probably be the first thing you see, followed by several articles that illuminate our country’s dangerous issues. I think you can read some of it without subscribing. It could be worth buying a hard copy. This issue is sadly historic.

I have been called names on TOTV by those who assume I am what they call me. It might surprise them to know that I am not who they think I am. “It was my party and I’ll cry if I want to.”

One of my home state’s senators is not running again. He is of the party most popular with TV voters. He is a decent man. I have voted for him in the past. I know someone who knows him. But he is giving up. We are losing our decent politicians to be replaced by stupid puppets that have no idea what democracy means, nor do they care.

While I am at it, may I explain the irony of invoking Orwell’s 1984 as a battle cry. Those who use it must not have read the book — because in the book, the country of Oceania is governed by a totalitarian regime, an all-controlling party — that has brainwashed the people into blind obedience to their leader — Big Brother.

This post is an appeal to the intelligence I can recognize in so many posters here — but I cannot figure out why intelligent people cannot see what is happening right before our eyes.

I sincerely hope some of you will decide to find The Atlantic, January 2022, read an article or two, and think about the depth and significance of what we are seeing as democracy — and decency — are dying — fast.

Also, if you can stand quite a peppering of “bad” words, look up Trae Crowder on YouTube and let him explain a few things.

Yours truly,
Boomer — I know — on thin ice, along with others. But if only one or two posters take my suggestion for some reading — or at least watch Trae Crowder for a humorous approach, and do some further thinking on their own, it will have been worth the skate.

The main point is that Sumter County may have the most honest government in the state.

Two of the Sumter County commissioners have just been charged with perjury. If that's what "the most honest government in the state" then I'd say this is a pretty sadly-run state.

I really hope there are counties that do better.

Yup - out of 25.5 million votes, they found a *potential* (not confirmed) 475 total voter fraud cases. And even if all 475 were switched to the "other" candidate, it still wouldn't have changed the outcome in any of those 6 states.

ElDiabloJoe,

Huh?

I think you called me an elitist. And, btw, I am not a Progressive either.

I am just one of the endangered species — a moderate.

If you were not so hell-bent on categorizing me, you would be surprised that I agree with a lot of what you said in your paragraph that began with, “You’re wrong.” I am there with you on a lot of those points.

Your categorization of me made the assumption that I disparage the military and the police. I most certainly do not — and I resent the assumption. You could not be more wrong about that..

About my support of the military — I will say also that I sometimes think we need to bring back the draft. Why? Because our country does not seem to be able to grow men like they used to. We have too much undirected testosterone running amok. There are plenty of young women who could use some direction, too. But getting knocked up without having a clue how to parent is the name of the game.

Btw, thank you for not saying January 6 was a good thing. I have a very good friend who votes Republican come hell or high water. But he told me that he sees January 6 the same way I do. . .Of course, we all know there are those who might never do such a thing themselves — but they are still cheering for those tools, those pawns, those puppets. I watched it in real-time — and I cried. Democracy under siege. If ol’ Mitch had not called them back in, Democracy would have died that day. Now it’s in the ICU, but it survived — for now.

Are you sure you won’t take a look at the January issue of The Atlantic? If you are willing to even look at the cover, you will see why I thought it was worth taking the risk of going political in this thread.

Anyway, ElDiabloJoe, you got me so wrong, so very wrong. And — if I were a member of MENSA, I would not tell everybody. That seems elitist.

Funny, when compared to communists, even leftist liberals consider themselves "moderates."

Do I think this blemish will hurt us? Nope, unfortunately we will still see the multitudes clambering to get the first bid in on a home here. This place is like the SciFi movie "The BLOB" that continues to grow as it absorbs more and more humans.
I still see it as Disneyland for seniors. As long as there is way more good than bad about this place, there will be folks standing in line for a spot in the community..
