refrigerator in designer home
Cannot find a refrig to fit in kitchen need 68 1/4 and everything I see is taller and won't fit under cabinet. Has anyone else had this problem? Salesman told us traditional opening is 70 but the villages didn't give us 70. So far have tried sears, Lowes, home depot and h g Gregg. Am I missing any stores. Finding this very frustrating

Yep, I too ran into the same problem... ended up shaving a bit off the bottom. Caution... I went with a counter depth refrigerator, so it would be flush to the cabinets...and ran into problem there too. Though I have the depth...If I push it all the way in, I don't have the necessary clearance for the doors to open. Still looks better than the traditional size which sticks way out...just saying. Good luck!

Is the house under warranty yet?
TV will correct it. We had a similar problem and had to have the bottom rail of the cabinet notched to allow the proper sized refrigerator opening. |

We have a custom built Gardenia, the opening is 72 by 48. I would have the cabinets adjusted so you can use a standard size refrigerator. I think this will cost you less in the long run.

If we have cabinet raised above refrigerator, then it will look awkward as the cabinets along the wall won't be level?

Raised my cabinet over fridge. It does not look bad as some cabinets are raised to give it a different effect.

Who did it? My hubby tried but said its glued very tightly to the one next to it. Did you hire a carpenter?

Take a look at installing a 12 inch cabinet versus the 15 inch that is probably installed. Also, one of my cabinets had a sticker for the original cabinets (in my case Timberwood Properties) and they were glad to supply matching cabinets for a window seat I installed. If you do not find a sticker, call warranty, and ask where the cabinets came from. Any decent carpenter should be able to remove the existing cabinet and install a new one. By the way, in my case the new cabinets were very reasonable cost.
Hope this helps.

In our old place we just took the cabinet out as we didn't use it anyway.

Would never take out. You always need extra storage space even if for those items you use occasionally. This is upsetting as all designer homes should have had at least a 70" height opening and I should not have to hire a carpenter to try to make this right

We were able to find a Samsung fridge that fits perfectly. It's narrow enough and just tall enough. Look at the true measurements of the fridge. Many of them are 70" at the front edges of the door, but the actually fridge height is 68" high. Go to the advance settings at Lowes.com and click on height. You'll find several to choose from. I just did it and saw several that I would purchase. Honestly, you have to be you own detective when it comes to appliance purchases. So many of the salespeople at the local stores are clueless as to how to properly measure an opening and fridge... Good Luck... And if you can wait until November, that is when the do their model changes and you can get a bargain like we did... a $3300 fridge for $1700 (which is the most I've ever paid for one in my life) - but it fits perfectly and has all the bells and whistles I'll ever need.

One other piece of info. Cabinets are not typically glued, however, they do typically have screws between the cabinets at the front wood to hold them together and eliminate any gaps or offsets in the face of the cabinets.

I hired a villager carpenter (retired) to move my cabinets upward about an inch. It cost me about $60.
