It is a mess as crime pays these days.

I can attest to this. Where I live, if the value of the theft is below either $3000 or $5000, police wont do anything.

Thanks for that info. Yet another great reason to live here!

I suspect the rate would be even lower if the Villages MSA only included The Villages.

as the villages population expands in sumter county will the crime rate move up closer to orlando/jacksonville rates or are seniors more law abiding than the general population

Yes, older people have been there and done that got it out of our system for the most part. Now its just feels better to be law abiding.

As testosterone levels drop (violent) crime rates drop, IMHO.

Also many druggies die before they can grow old so they are not out stealing, burglarizing and robbing for their next fixes. Some druggie or otherwise problem adult children having criminal histories and habits of course are living in TV in their parents' homes.

Now if we could get those golf cart speeders to slow down.... We'd really be safe

I think that is without question. The Villages MSA is all of Sumter County. If you included only the physical area of TV and excluded the rest of Sumter, Lake, and Marion, I am convinced the reported crimes would drop precipitously.

The crime rates apply to that part of the Villages within Sumter County and Sumter itself.
VIOLENT CRIMES: 305
MURDER & NONNEGLIGENT MANSLAUGHTER: 6
RAPE: 24
ROBBERY: 24
AGGRAVATED ASSAULT: 251
PROPERTY CRIMES: 1,158
BURGLARIES: 310
THEFTS: 782
MOTOR VEHICLE THEFTS:66

while some of the info presented may be true, i think it has a lot to do with location, some are simply more crime-ridden. not much we can do about that, really, except move. i know where we came from 'up north' we had much more significant crime in the area of gang activity & armed robberies. i expect we won't see much of that here, an occasional offense, but NOTHING like some less fortunate regions where crime is a way of life
