I am just going to have to clean up after Beau. Opening the door with 90 mph gusts of wind is not a good idea. And he is a little dog.

My sister's dog's potty area is in a section of a flower bed filled with mulch and no vegetation. She took a small bag full of the mulch with the dog's scent on it and will put the mulch on newspaper on top of plastic in the garage. Hopefully, the dog won't be finicky and will go potty without any problem.

It is a tough call

Folks can disagree, but IMO it is a bit cruel to let the dog go inside. Cruel is a bit overstated (no wordsmith here).

My dogs (past and present) would be in extreme discomfort before they would ever relieve them selves in the house. I would never want to put them through that.

We have to evaluate the circumstances and the danger of course, but I think the idea of danger opening a door in tropical winds may be a bit overstated. Stay on the non wind side of the house and be quick.

Just my thoughts, no better than anyone else...

be safe

I followed your idea and photo example...and it works great!

One of these days, I may even decide...to get a pet. :1rotfl:

I agree with AJ, any dog that has been trained to NEVER go to the bathroom indoors would have to be in extreme discomfort before they relieve themselves indoors. If it's possible to safely stay on the non wind side of the house and be quick, it might be feasible.

However it is the humans responsibility to stay safe. And if you feel it's unsafe to go outside, your dogs will survive. Put down lots of paper, tell your dogs it's OK to go pee on the newspaper, and you might be surprised. Just hope for the best.

Above all, stay safe.

Dogs are such creatures of habit. Mine are loyal and well house-trained but not overly brilliant. At least one of them would look at sod in the garage and be, like, "Whaaa??? It's DIFFERENT!"

I agree with ajbrown. We'll sneak out on the lee side whenever/if possible. If not possible and they have an accident, oh well. That's why they made paper towels.

I've been practicing when the wind is bowing strong, he's walking with his tail between his legs but still did his business. I'll take him out as often as I can if there are breaks in the storm.

How did the sod boxes work out? My dogs just held themselves all night. We had put cardboard in the garage but they would not use it.

Sod Plugs: I was able to get her out for short walks when there were breaks in the storm. I tried the sod plugs just before bed and she sniffed them, but refused to stay on them or pee on them. She held it for about 12 hours till our morning walk. She hibernated.
