If they did not charge membership fee they would add something to the cost of the product to cover costs.

We find we are way dollar wise ahead joining the big box clubs.

The savings outweigh the cost of membership. When I smoked cigarettes, my Costco membership was paid for within the first couple of months each year. That was a no brainer to have a membership.

Personally we go there a couple times per week along with Aldis and Winn Dixie. Again, lucky. Never incented to shop at Publix. But for those who do, great.

good point. i wouldn't mind having a full-store closer to us, south of 44. one can dream, lol

Right now, no cashiers, half of terminals cash only which is bizarre . terrible lines. Shelves poorly stocked. They need to move faster

Quality that I like is at Publix. The off brands, awful deli, poor bakery, bring us back to Public each time we try Walmart. Is Publix too expensive? You bet. Their bakery for a super market is excellent. Baked breads are right up there with any bakery here in Central Florida. They make the BEST deli subs. We would not touch a Wal-Mart sub! Love BOGOs. To make you Wal-Mart lovers twitch even more, we even use Instacart to deliver. Life is good.

Your not convincing me, Publix is still overpriced especially when you can take 12 items at Publix
and buy the same dam 12 items at Walmart for $10.00 - $12.00 less, just don't make sense.

OH, and I don't have to buy two to get the other half price at Walmart, because I DON'T WHAT TWO!!!

A whole lot of people prefer Publix. There are 3 Walmart in TV and more then 10 Publix. Publix is very successful in TV.
I like the BOGOS if I do not need the 2nd item I donate it to a Food Pantry.

It will be an adjustment, no doubt about that.

On the plus side, the self-checkout arrangement is much better than how it used to be. Those checkout corrals with the lines snaking up to them were frustrating. Went there yesterday and the self-checkout seemed to move MUCH faster.

On the minus side...narrow aisles. Over in Hardware (if you can call it that--the section is labeled "hardware" but the first four rows were toys) the aisles are so narrow that if two carts meet the only way through is for the cart-pushers to hug their side of the aisle as close to the items for sale as possible, and Wal-Mart shoppers are not exactly known for being polite and considerate of others. You can turn a cart around--just barely--to get back out but if there are people behind you it gets tricky. I've found the best way to shop at Wal-Mart is to go to the area where your item(s) are located, park your cart in a major aisle between and tight up against the display racks the have in those spots, and just walk to get your stuff. Much easier and quicker.

This I suppose will get better with time--but a lot of the associates STILL don't know where items are located. They may have a general idea but don't expect them to walk you to the item as some of them used to do. Still not knowing where a lot of the items are located I asked two associates where they might be located. One, a young lady stocking shelves, was very helpful, taking me to the area and then helping to locate the item. The other, when I asked her where I might find signs, said "hardware". When I asked if she could be more specific she just said "hardware--over there", and pointed in the general direction. I replied that I knew where hardware was but I was looking for something a bit more specific such as an aisle number. She just replied "I don't know--hardware!" and looked irritated. So much for that.

But, it is Wal-Mart. It is what it is. There are stores with much better service but you're going to pay for it.

Lovey2 07-27-2022 07:23 AM

Exactly what I said to my hubs! It's a ploy to get you to SEE more. Also, when the other stores (Publix, etc) change up their aisles periodically...all a marketing ploy. People get used to going where the products they want are. If they change the aisles up, you have to look more and potentially buy more.

Interesting ... we were there around 4:30 yesterday (Tues) and it was total opposite. All the self-checkout machines were opened (except half only took CASH and weren't clearly marked) and the place was virtually empty of people. No lines and 2 "real" cashiers. They are trying to keep inventory low (must be all in the side parking lot that is closed off in trailers) so they can move fixtures around.

Sign outside says SEPTEMBER 23rd Grand Reopening so it will be a while before it's "normal" whatever that is.

They often jack up the price for a "BOGO." Have seen it numerous times on specific items we look for the sales they often have. Bai drinks are one example. They were usually 3 for $5, then went to $1,99 "on sale (forever until then next BOGO jump to $2.59) then for BOGO WEEK they are $2.59 then after that back to $1.99 for a short period before bouncing back to $2.59. Usually when you see the price go up you know a BOGO or "sale" is coming in the upcoming ad. They have also done it on specific frozen foods and certain ice cream. Winn-Dixie does it as well. We are always waiting for certain items which almost always go BOGO every few weeks over the years and the game is pretty obvious. Stil a "sale" but rarely BOGO FREE.

trichard 07-27-2022 08:07 AM

If you don’t like it shop someplace else.

B-flat 07-27-2022 08:24 AM

We shop Walmart regularly. We do go to Publix for their great sandwiches and pastry products. Occasionally they have a BOGO on an item we use. Actually better than Publix or Walmart is "Market Basket" located in New England. One recently opened in the New England town we live in during the summer. They have great prices and the quality of Publix bakery. The only gotcha is we have so many good local bakeries there's no need to purchase Market Basket bakery item.

Publix is "very successful" in TV because they are virtually everywhere. That's like saying "golf courses are successful in TV and a whole lot of people prefer them."

Don't get me wrong, I far prefer Publix over anything else here but their success here can easily be attributed to the sheer amount of them. I don't consider Winn-Dixie a real option and it seems here in Florida unlike up north there isn't a lot of major competition.

Agreed, but, I'm not sure that it matters if I spend 33 buck on my groceries or 25 buck. Nope, it doesnt. The shopping visit is so much better at Publix.

Carol@TV 07-28-2022 05:17 PM

I don't care for using the self-check when I have a huge cart full of groceries, so I recently started ordering online and then picking up the groceries. It is working pretty well for me.

100% true which is why we shop there 95% of the time except for specific items which are DOLLARS cheaper at WallyMart. .... but the response was to someone who thought they were getting "one for free." "Free" and "cheaper" are 2 different things. "Buy one Get One Free" is a great advertising gimmick.

Do you think Publix would build 10 stores if they didn’t think they would make money?

There’s a reason there are only 2 Walmarts……Walmart doesn’t think the market is there for 10 Walmarts.

Actually there are more than 2 I believe including the one in Lake Cty and like the super walmarts.

Tvflguy 07-28-2022 08:04 PM

Every few weeks I go to Winn Dixie to get a few things including their store brand diet root beer called “Chex”. The name brand root beers are outrageously high $$$ now and Chex is almost as good. Good enough to save $$$

Well today WD had my Chex “on sale”. Buy 2 get 1 free. OK. The regular price is 3 12 packs for $10. Today each was 5.99. So the deal is buy 2 for $12 get one free. I would not bend over for that. Please. I’ll drink what I have at home and check prices in a week or so.

It seems to me that they change the location of stuff about monthly or even more often, maybe weekly. But then I was in a Home Depot and had to ask an employee where something was and he complained that HD moves stuff around with some regularity. Anything to keep the buyer in the store longer looking at the shelves. That's why I do online shopping often.

Huh? What? Of course that's true. The point was they CAN'T HELP being successful HERE (which was the comment I replied to) seeing as they are just about on every corner and most convenient and most folks prefer to shop closer to home rather than (for some) a 15-20 mile RT to Walmart or Target neither of which are truly a supermarket despite what they call themselves. That plus they can afford to pay the Morse Vigorish. There's Winn-Dixie but I consider them here more of an overpriced 7-11/WAWA with much less of a selection than Publix (they recently restructured and removed a lot of departments). The only time I see W.D. busy HERE is when they only have 1 or 2 cashiers and the lines become long because they have no help (and no self-checkout registers at LSL store) . Even stranger is their logo says they are "the beef people" and don't even carry prime beef around here.

Aloha1 07-31-2022 01:37 PM

We are talking about the Walmart MARKET on Heald Way not the other Walmarts.

asianthree 09-04-2022 01:56 AM

So finally went to newly remodeled Walmart market ( we call it baby Walmart). Space between shelves seem the same, so when one leaves their cart to stand in front of display its hard to get past them.

I found English muffins in four different areas, :clap2: guessing the suppliers who lost end cap display is getting more exposure. The expansion of self checkout is definitely an improvement, as far as tap and pay, I never go out of the house with just my watch to pay, so not a big deal to just use a credit card.

jebartle 09-04-2022 03:13 AM

Love Walmart pickup. Purchase $35, really easy, no fee (won't take tip, not allowed), pop trunk, and off you go. If out of stock, they up grade product for same price. Give "goody bags" frequently. No brainer for me. Added bonus, when purchasing on line, not tempted to buy what you don't need.

Not sure of the reference...The Wal-Mart on 441 a couple of blocks from Aldi?

Not sure what that "remodel" (more like rearrangement) was intended to accomplish. But what it DID do is to totally snarl shopper and cart traffic. The cat food aisle for example: now way in the back of the store in an aisle so narrow that two carts cannot meet in it. One has to turn around and go back. I've taken to parking my cart in an open area (usually between aisle displays), then go and get my item(s) and carrying them back to the cart.

Prices aren't always the cheapest around either. Our coffee grinder lunched itself after several years of service and we stopped by Wal-Mart for a new one. They had exactly ONE brand, selling for $45. No deal. I found one on Amazon the same day (Krups) for half the price plus prime one-day delivery.

Every time I go to that particular Wal-Mart I get irritated. But I keep going back, and despite what I see as off-the-wall merchandise arrangements and limited choices the place is always full.

Topic of this thread is Walmart Remodel on herald way

I shop there for 2 items, Indian River OJ, and grapefruit juice. I didn’t think this Walmart carried small appliances, you may be on the wrong thread. This is about the Walmart market, and the remodel of the aisles, with the removal of the center aisle, the addition of more self checkout.

I already tried to get this thread back on topic but nobody is paying attention. Instead it's turned into a generic Walmart verse Publix thread. Go figure.

More reasons why to not go to Walmart. 1st time I was in one of their stores, felt like I was at an auditon for a Jerry Springer show. Worst check out counters/system in any store.

Totally agree, rates right up there with those who don’t read previous posts and repeat same answers over an over.

On topic, I didn’t think losing the center aisle would be a big deal, until I forgot ice tea, what a pain. I just don’t understand why they put items in multiple places.

All these ideas come from upper management/marketing folks. The same folks that never go shopping.

Think it simply boils down to saving money. Since it's the biggest grocery retailer in the country, they are doing something right.

There are a number of items we like to buy there so we go and stock up and try not to come back for a month.
