Scale (white buildup on appliances) comes from the hardness in the water (calcium and magnesium ions). Unless you have a sodium chloride/potassium chloride based water softener or one the so-called "salt free" conditioners (aka TAC water conditioners) you will still get scale buildup if you have hard water. I don't know anyone with a TAC water conditioner so I am not sure how effective their crystallization technology is. Sodium chloride/potassium chloride water softeners are very effective in scale reduction as they drive the water hardness to zero.

It could be the chlorine in the water. It is pretty high at about 1.5 ppm. Do your eyes bother you in a chlorinated pool (not sure how "salt water pools" work - not all pools are chlorinated)? If not, then you may want to see an allergy specialist. If so, I would suspect the chlorine. A carbon filter will remove the chlorine.

All I'll say, without naming a brand, is that we have a potassium based R/O unit no scale buildup, no heavy metals in the water, and several jealous neighbors. Anyone with a neurological condition especially need to be sure they are eliminating heavy metals from their water supply.

When you say "potassium based" R/O, that implies a water softener using potassium chloride on the whole house water supply and an R/O on the kitchen sink, perhaps?? Yes, R/O systems take everything out - leave you with pure water and no dissolved solids. My dad has an R/O but only on the kitchen sink. To do a R/O for the entire house would cost a small fortune which is why they are typically only done for the kitchen sink. My dad's setup is pretty nice - probably a lot like yours??? Carbon filter to remove chlorine, water softener to remove hardness, and R/O on the kitchen sink - for cooking, coffee. Unfortunately they don't have the refrig water supply off of the R/O system - too hard to run the pipe to the refrig with a slab ranch.

Water softeners and filters target two different issues. You now have a filter to remove sediment/chlorine. Chlorine gives water it's gnarly taste. A water softener removes hardness, which you can't taste but contributes to scale build-up, glass etching, using more soap, dry skin, etc. Many people have both since they address two different issues. Many people have neither. Many people have just one. Many people buy a "hybrid system" that contains both a water softener and a filter to remove sediment/chlorine.
