Was 200 they upped it to 300 more than I really need

Paying for "up to 400Mbps" from Xfinity but was upgraded to "up to 600Mbps" at no additional charge a month or so ago. Consistently getting OVER 700+Mbps. and at least 675 Mbps every time I check. And yes, I often make good use of the bandwidth.

Century link sometimes nearing 300 Mbps upload and download.

Even if you have a 4K TV and you're getting 25, you need more simply because your cell phone and your home phone or using Wi-Fi also and then someone might be on a computer in a different room. Just like the commercials more is always better oh, most people do not have 4K however actually 5-10 MBS is good enough. What really matters his consistency, especially if you are farthest from a hub

Owning your own modem?
 

One of the techies from the Geek Squad at Best Buy told me that one way to prevent your internet service provider from throttling back your speed is to own your own modem that they can’t control. Not sure if this is true or if the guy was just trying to make a sale. Maybe someone with more knowledge could weigh in.

Not true. Even if you own the modem, the internet provider can monitor and control it, and the level of service they provide.

We own our own router and pay for 25 MBPS download speed which is the speed we are getting. It is enough to stream 2 tvs simultaneously and surf the web. I'm thankful to an honest Xfinity rep who told me that I really didn't have a need to be paying for the faster speeds and he was right. I don't believe that owning your own router makes a different. My understanding is that the speed is controlled through filters prior to getting to the router.

I typically get 40 MBPS which is more than enough for our usage. We frequently have two computers running along with streaming our high-end TV. We never see any issues.

Unless you are downloading movies, faster speeds may be nice but hardly necessary. It's like having a car that goes 150 MPH. Except for the rare few, it's never needed nor used.

With my provider you are paying for "if your lucky, and we are having a good day!"
