You must really love those plates! I'd store them in a bottom cabinet. And anyway .... you will need a new set of dishes when you get to TV to go with your new lifestyle.

We stretched the width through the kitchen -- 2 foot. It goes through the Laundry/Kitchen/Nook/Lanai. We built a Lilac. I took the extra 2 feet in the kitchen and pulled the Breakfast Bar into the kitchen. That way all our stools will be on the kitchen tile. Gives a little more space in the Living Room. You can look at the Lily if you think you like an Island.

Island in kitchen is a 4 letter word to my wife. I wouldn't dare mention it to her...thanks for the suggestion though.

Actually they are not that old. Well compared to our Noritake China we bought say just over 39 years ago. Any way the china dinner plate is maybe an 1/8 in. smaller than our everyday.
Are you saying that people eat smaller portions now and they could use smaller plates! We've both been dieting but I don't think my wife is ready to give up her plates..When I told her about the issue (about the plates not fitting in the cabinets) a few choice Brooklyn eplicatives went flying!
My wife is very sweet but this kind of riled her up. We'll work it out...

Neighbor: We took out most of the bottom "cabinets" and made each section into drawers. Some have three drawers, some have four. That is what we did in our current home and it works out great. We also took out the pantry and put in a set of drawers in the bottom and a regular cabinet on top (no wine rack). Drawers are so much easier to get things out of, better than bending over and getting something out of the back of a cabinet. Most everything will fit in a drawer - even everyday dishes. We have soft self closing drawers here, but we did not get them down there. I really like soft - self closing, but did not want to spend the extra $ on soft closures.

Who needs dishes? Around here, everyone eats out...

If you store the plates face up, the edge may be above the lip of the cabinet.

Here in Michigan we keep our dishes in lower cabinet pull out. When I first saw that Steve did this, I thought it was strange but it's actually easier, right next to the dishwasher.

Well, we haven't had any problem in our lantana with dishes fitting in the cabinets and we didn't ask for anything special. Although the kitchen we ended up with was the Ivy, I think the cabinets are just the same regular cabinets. I am pretty sure they will fit unless you have some oversized or unusual shape. Here is a novel idea: Ask the designer :)
