Default Why are generators being used for home construction?

Anybody that has walked around a village under construction will hear the constant buzz of generators, as each work crew seems to be responsible for providing their own electricity.

This seems to be a very inefficient way to build homes, especially when you consider the negative effect of noise and smog on those residents who have already moved in. Not to mention the additional cost to subcontractors to purchase, maintain and fuel generators.

I contacted SECO to ask them why they don't provide electric service during construction. It turns out that they do provide such a service, but it is up to the developer to request it (and presumably pay for it).

Having SECO provide construction electric service seems like a good idea that would improve the quality of life here in The Villages, and simplify the work of builders. Could also 'green up' the developers image.

Default re: generators

Having been involved in construction in florida, I can tell you that with the scale of construction at TV, the cost would be prohibitive, A separate permit is required for each temporary service. It must be mounted on a pole away from the building, which gets in the way of site work(grading, landscaping, etc), and the use of longer extension cords is not real good for the contractors power tools.

Also, TV builds with a roster of 18 builders, some subs they use for nearly every home (i.e. Munns and Massey) and other subs each builder prefers. If they installed power, they wouldn't be easily able to track the cost to build each home overall and by type of sub.

And...this is tricky. There are several builders working directly for the villages with their own crews. I think that they contract for exact and specific services and enhancements to each house. (Each different, the spec homes) and they know to a penny how it will price when finished.

We have built several times and the mess and the noise and the dust is all part of it.

If the developer pays more, it has a trickle down effect.

I am confidant if that is how they do it, it is the best way. They are brilliant.

There are 6 builders in The Villages for new residential construction. Each Buiders has so many supers. They all use the same subs. so they all know what each other is doing. Trust me, the Man that runs the residential construction knows what each builder is doing and makes sure they keep to his schedule. It is done this way so everyone knows who is where and when. Must of subs use their own portable generators due to the fact they have to move around so often in the day from house to house. Also there will so many people at one house and not possible to have electric for everyone. And the cost is a factor. But mainly much faster for a sub to pull up to a house, crank the generator and start working instead of batteling for the outlet for power.
The Villages has a system set and it works. Going to have noise and dust anytime you build. Part of life.

Guess that is why they can throw up a house just as quick as a mobile home, right? Far superior builders....my foot!
