Wifi available
Does anyone have WIFI in their house or villa? I know it is available at Starbucks, Panera etc but would like to have it in the house.

You can easily set up a wireless network in your house but first you need an internet connection. Go to Walmart, Best Buy or wherever and buy a wireless router. Comcast will help you set it up when they install your internet.

Sammy.... I would venture to say that most folks with high speed internet who have more than one computer/laptop/ipad/etc have WiFi inside their house/villa.
All you need (for Comcast) is the cable modem to take the signal out of the wall and a router to broadcast WiFi throughout your house. But, if you're asking if "free" WiFi is available in the neighborhoods (without having to pay Comcast/Embarq for high speed internet) then the answer is no. You might be able to pick up an unsecured WiFi network signal from a neighbor and piggyback off of it, but, performance probably isn't that great and you can't rely on them to keep the signal on.

Actually I am trying to figure out if with Comcast you can hook up WIFI which then can be used for Amazon's Kindle which for newspapers ,requires WIFI. In other words, I can go to Panera and use their WIFi to download abook for my Kindle. So how do you get the WIFI in your house to do the same? Thru Comcast also?
Thanks |

Yes, once Comcast internet is installed, you or they will install a modem. $5 a month from them, about $80 to buy one, then buy a wireless router, another $75 and connect it to the modem with an Ethernet cable. Go through the setup and configuration and you will have in house wifi. The kindle works fine with it. I have four places and it is in all of them.

embarq also has a wifi modem upgrade from their standard dsl modem for 5 dollars a month.
i'm not technically or physically very handy but managed to set it all up on my own. i use amazon's whispernet for all my kindle book purchasaes but the embarq wifi became a must for many of my ipad apps.

We have the Sprint portable WIFI hotspot that can be used wherever there is Sprint cell phone service (nearly everywhere in the US). Got the hotspot device free with a two year contract to pay $59/mo for the service. You can connect up to 5 WIFI devices to it at once.
They sell the hotspot device at Wal-Mart etc for around $200 and then you can contract with Vonage for $30/per month for the cell phone connection. If you are a snowbird and have different homes you stay at at different times of the year, it eliminates having to contract with a WIFI provider at each home. It can also be used while you are traveling. .

Sammy, I bought a Netgear wireless "N" router from Best Buy in a package deal. It included the router, in-house setup of up to 3 devices (laptop, tv and wireless printer), 6 months of phone support, and a $20 card for free movies on Cinema Now. Cost was $129 + tx
