And here is the Sumter Co noise ordinance with my addition of bold to highlight the operative phrase which may cover this situation. Not suggesting calling the sheriff but if you get to that point I would have the law printed out for their reference.
Sec. 16-107. - Specific prohibitions. The following specified acts and circumstances are hereby declared to constitute prohibited noise disturbances in violation of this article; provided however, such enumeration is not and shall not be deemed to be exclusive; provided further that all other acts and circumstances meeting the definition of noise disturbance are likewise declared to be in violation of this article. (1) Radios, televisions, musical instruments and similar devices, and amplified human voice. Playing or permitting the playing of any radio, television, musical instrument or similar device, whether amplified or not amplified, or amplifying the human voice in such a manner or with such volume as to annoy or disturb the quiet, comfort and repose of a reasonable person in any type of residence or place of business; provided, however, this prohibition shall not apply to regularly scheduled outdoor entertainment activities in the downtown or urban areas within developments of regional impact, so long as such events terminate not later than 10:00 p.m. |

Two thinks to think about..-it will soon be much too hot to sit outside and watch TV, summer and all
and two....desperate times call for despirate measures.....find some way to make it uncomfortable for him to sit outside.....drastic but dog poop smell comes to mind, or fertilize your yard with cow manure. subtle but effective. last resort, rent it out and move away.... |
2 big directional speakers on your lanai that you turn on when the TV comes on, fire with fire....or use a bullhorn to ask them to turn it down.

I feel for you. We had a similar situation. The people lived on the lanai all day long. Television going, drinking parties, etc. They were both very hard of hearing, and factor in the drinking, their voices were very loud. We spoke with them several times and explained the situation. They promised to be quieter, but they weren't quiet. He did volunteer to use the cordless headphones to listen to the tv which was a huge help. But the late night parties really got to us. Finally I blew may stack, and after listening to their drinking party after midnight one night, I called the cops. They quit speaking to us, and sold the house and moved. Best thing I ever did. New neighbors are like church mice.
I would get a set of headphones and ask them to use them. If that doesn't work, you can always enclose your lanai, or add soundproofing windows to your master bedroom so you can sleep in peace and quiet. Some people make a quiet relaxing type space out in the front of their house, so they don't have to interact with the noisy neighbors behind. It depends on the type of house you have whether you can do that. Even putting in a privacy hedge/thick trees or vegetation helps. You may still hear the noise, but somehow its not as bad if you can't see the people. If they play the television past 10:00 and won't use the headphones, call and report them. Sometimes you just have to get tough. Hope this helps. Keep us posted. |
This is definitely a disadvantage of our homes being so close. We can actually sit on lanai and hear the neighbors through the walls if they are arguing. Most the time it is quiet though.

I live in a court yard villa I was told by one of my neighbors that every time she flushes the toilet our dog barks. And that statement might be true but the only problem is we DON`T have a dog HELLO!!!!!!!!!!

The problem is, you can buy a premier home on a golf course, and get noisy neighbors on the side. I was talking to a lady who was going to sell her house. The next door neighbor lived in the birdcage, on the phone all the time, loud voice, and she couldn't sit on her lanai and enjoy the golf course view without listening to him. There have been stories about noisy dogs barking, etc. No matter where you are, you can have rude, inconsiderate people. I personally think they are in the minority, and that if you nicely ask, MOST people will do the neighborly thing. If they don't you have to take extreme measures.

White noise. Either a white noise generator (there are many free apps in iTunes) or a loud water fountain. I used to travel a lot for business, stayed in many noisy hotel rooms, and my white noise apps were a lifesaver.

They say that kissing lanais are one of the main reasons that the "average Villager moves 3 times".
We knew when we looked at homes that we wanted to spend time on the Lanai relaxing and did not want to be able to look into, and hear conversations from our next door neighbors lanais, and the 3 homes behind us. We quickly decided we would prefer a road or a wall. Either one offers much more privacy and each has advantages and disadvantages. It was too big a risk for us to take, expecting to have quiet neighbors in the 5 homes in hearing range of our lanai. We ended up on a pretty busy road. But our view is absolutely phenomenal and the traffic is really not an issue for us. Many of our neighbors have enclosed their lanais due to the traffic, but we love the open feel and after 6pm, there really is no traffic. We have much more privacy I feel than we would have on an interior lot. Our neighbors across the street all back up to villa walls and they love their lots as well. 3 of them have moved from homes with kissing lanais. Hopefully you can make nice with the noisy neighbors and the offer of headphones will be accepted graciously. Hedges, and white noise would be my next option at that point. If they are just obnoxious and really not concerned about their impact on your life thencall the sheriff's office and maybe that will get their attention. Good luck!! |
I cannot imagine putting a t.v. on my lanai.
And if someone is hard of hearing they should NOT have a t.v. outside. Talk about being inconsiderate! We ended up spending a lot more not to be in a kissing lanai situation. We should all try to be more considerate of each other. |

I once toured a timeshare and the salesman boasted how each unit came with it's own karaoke machine. |
