Xfinity has a full list of supported equipment on their website. I just brought the list with me to Best Buy and that made the process of finding what I needed quite easy.

On their website, it suggests we use their modem/router (xFi Gateway) at an additional cost in order to have "unlimited data" for our home internet service.

Xfinity website says unlimited data is not included when using personal equipment. Is this true? Is Xfinity trying to make an additional buck by requiring subscribers to buy their equipment or will we need their Gateway box to have peace of mind? We never heard of this....we are coming from out of state, use Spectrum with our "own" modem/router equipment and never worry about data usage from inside our home.

Thank you for any helpful information.

You might want to check to see if Quantum Fiber is available in your area. I just switched to them and got a price for life which is so much better than the ongoing price increases with the cable companies. I am very happy with Quantum!

Went with Xfinity almost 2 years ago, using my own Netgear AC1600 modem router, paying $40/month and no issues.

Is the service adequate for lots of streaming and what should I expect to pay per month? Thank you

How exactly do you negotiate with Xfinity? What magic words do you use? Their attitude has always been “tale it or leave it”.

In case anyone is looking for that list, here is a link:

Use your own Modem

We've had XFINITY internet and phone service, no cable TV since moving to The Villages in 2015. Using their equipment is simply a ripoff. The only thing you need to do is purchase a modem that is on the XFINITY website as compatible. XFINITY is required, by law, to permit users to use their own equipment. You do not get extra data from using their equipment, the only thing you get is "free service" if something goes wrong with the modem. I'm been using my own cable internet modems for 20+ years and have yet to have an issue. We only do streaming and our total usage is ~200 GB/mo. The XFINITY plan is >1TB/mo. Unless you're doing something very unusual, I doubt that you'd need more than 1TB. You really get no value in paying for the extra stuff, it's just profit for XFINITY.

Very true, we are now paying $ 198 per month for pretty much basic service and when we said we are going to leave offered to take 10 bucks off our price.

Told the lady that is beyond pathetic and response was what would you like us to do.

The other consideration, when you have a problem, if you have THEIR modem/router then the service call is no charge, as well as any repairs. In 10 years, modem/router replaced once, and the service drop to the house replaced once, 3 service calls, and no charges.

Is there a map or a general rule of where which cable providers operate? (e.g. "Above 466",
"Below 44", "West of 441", etc)

Thanks!

I've not seen a map but I'm sure someone has built one.

What you can do without a map is go to the websites for the individual companies and find the link to see if service is available in your area. I used the tmobile and verizon sites to see that I am in the area for the 5G services and just yesterday I checked on Spectrum and Quantum fiber. Just plug in your address and see which, if any, plans are available.

Sounds like you’re moving into Marion County. Quantum Fiber should be available to you for internet, then you stream your TV. We got a deal with Quantum for $50/mo for the lesser speed and have 14 devices connected, sometimes have 2 TVs playing, our phones use WIFI in the house, and I use my iPad a ton and we have no problems. As a result of us being the “guinea pigs,” 3 of our neighbors/friends have dumped Xfinity and switched to Quantum for the same plan and are very happy.

Thank you all very much for the helpful information. Found out more than I knew before. We will be in the north area just south of 466 (Sumter County) and are definitely going to research our options.
