Default Amimal Rescue Groups

Does anyone know if there are any local animal rescue groups within maybe an hour of the Villages? My wife is an animal lover and would love to get involved in some type of volunteer group activities working with animals. Dogs, cats, birds, even aquatic creatures. Any type of rescue/rehabilitation groups nearby?

Any animal related clubs in the Villages?

There are several posters that are on here all the time about various animal rescues, money raising dinners, etc. I just did a search and here's a bunch of threads that should give you some good ideas.

HOME - Humane Society/SPCA of Sumter County, Inc. I have a friend that used and may still volunteer here.

Various breeds also have Rescue Groups often with Villages contacts-- http://www.adoptapet.com/adoption_rescue/80611.html

Max's Pet connection is a local group. They are at Petsmart every Saturday from 10-2 where you can meet the head, Maxine.
Also , there's a Responsible Dog Group that meets monthly (although off for the summer). They regularly go to the Humane Society to volunteer. In fact, I believe they are going on July 19. pm me for contact information on that trip.

South Lake Animal League is always in need of volunteers. One of my dogs came from there. The Animal League – Rescuing animals since 1988 Dogs and cats located on-site.

Florida Dachshund Rescue is also always needing volunteers. http://fldr.org/ We don't house our dogs at a single location. Our dogs are in foster homes all over the state. We can use another foster home or if you would like to volunteer to do other things, I can set you up. Here are just a few things you can do from home:
Foster
Applications Processing/Home Visits
Grant Writing
Fundraising
Donation/Sponsorship Solicitation
Event Staff
Transports
Sewing/Crafts

Thanks everyone, those are some great suggestions and we will look into them once we get situated down there.

Quick question, what is the policy on animals? I thought I heard/read somewhere that there were limitations. If you already have existing pets, how could you foster any pets in your home, or is there some wiggle room in the policy for this to be allowed?

I was thinking, once I move to TV, i would board a pet from Dogs from Deployment on a temporary basis.
