Another 50 something

I am a single, 50+ and purchased a place in late 2008. Unfortunately I will not be able to move down until retirement in 2013. I do visit when I am able, though it doesn't seem often enough for me to get my fix! I believe that age is relative. Perception is reality. If you perceive that you are old, then you are. Goes the other way also. Just have an open mind and meet as many people as possible. Don't worry about the age of the person. If you like that individual, then make them a friend! I don't worry about the weight of my friends, why should I worry about their age?

My wife and I cannot wait until we can move to The Villages. I am 50 and she is 49. We have been down to TV many times and each time that we have inquired about building a new home, they tell us that we cannot until at least one of us is 55 years old. How have you, and anyone else, been able to move in before you were 55? If there is a way, we'd really appreciate knowing how. Thanks in advance....Tom & Linda.

Tom and Linda.... I don't know who is telling you that, but, they are wrong. By federal fair housing laws, up to 20% of the homes can be sold to persons under 55 (with no 55+ resident in the home). The Villages is no where near the 20% limit.

Did you get this from a Villages sales agent or an MLS agent or from the grapevine?

The Villages developer's primary goal is to sell new houses. They would not let a little thing like age stop them from making a sale. There was a time, during the heydey of the 2003-2005 timeframe that they were a little stickier about someone being 55+, but, I haven't heard of any constraints since then.

Hi xlhig:
My husband and I are both younger than you and yours and we bought a pre-owned through MLS last year. We received our ID cards the day after closing and not one person gave us any trouble. In fact they were extremely welcoming. Don't take one salespersons word for it because that person is misinformed.
Now if we could only retire and get ourselves down there.

I purchased my villa in late 2008 when I was 50. When I started the process, my sales agent told me I needed to be "approved" to make the purchase. She also said it would probably not be a problem. I guess she talked with someone or sent an email or something and before I knew it I was "approved". Simple as that. I wondered if being single with no children had anything to do with the approval.

If I were you, I would talk with my sales agent again. My sales agent lives in The Villages and is several years younger than I. I'm not sure why you would not be "approved" and be able to live your dream in The Villages.

re: Not yet 55 years old

We were told this on 2 separate occasions from 2 different realtors/sales agents from their agents. They said we could buy a pre-owned home but we couldn't build a new home. Was yours new or pre-owned?

My home was brand new and fully furnished. I'm not sure why it would make a difference whether your home is new or pre-owned. If I were you, I would start asking more questions or perhaps work with a different sales rep from The Villages.

Realtor needed

Thanks for everyone's responses. We'd be interested in getting a few names/Email addresses of realtors that could help us BUILD a brand new home in TV, and able to sell to someone that is 50 years old. Thanks in advance, Tom & Linda

The only homes built in The Villages are built by The Villages. But there is a goodly amount of choices and price range.

You need to come down and visit and then it will all make sense.
Edited....................
I see after reading all of your posts that you have been here several times but it appears you only talked to realtors not associated with The Villages. If you go to the Sales center you can get those answers, or even just call the Sales Center. Have you received the CD?

Realtors/Sales Associates

Actually, we have only dealt with 2 different sales associates of TV. We've never dealt with an independent realtor down there, but the last time was a few years ago. Based on the posts and the private Emails I have received. it appears that hings may have changed. I've called today and left my name and number with one of their sales associates, and we are eagerly awaiting her to call us back. Thanks, Tom & Linda

Also, I still work while my wife does not. While we are enjoying ourselves, and have joined a few clubs (including the Baby Boomers), we're having trouble meeting anyone who is around our age group. Does anyone out there have any suggestions?

We have a fun group that works out at the Colony gym most nights between 6pm and 7pm. In our 50's... still work some. We do a lot together. Come join us. Ed, Ed, Scott, Kathy, Sally, Bob....
