coming for the first time
Hi Everyone
My husband and I are coming to TV for the first time for the official tour and to find a home. Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated. My husband is partially disabled ( uses a walker and at times a scooter). Are the public areas like the squares and eating establishments accessible? I guess my main concern is will he feel comfortable in such an active community? Thanks for any and all advice. |

You'll love it! I came for my first visit 15 months ago and I'm moving in next week. I think most places you go will be no problem for your husband. I've looked at some houses that have been built to handicapped specs. I'm sure you're going to find just what you need and have a wonderful time!

Your husband will have zero problems here. We came, and 6 months later bought. BUT word of advise, be prepared to be totally blown away by TV. It is so much better then you would believe and even the DVD. We were so unprepared for what we saw, we couldn't pay attention to the houses we were shown and had to come back again to look to buy.

You will be very pleased
We came down several times and loved it more each time. St Patricks week was it for us. Just got back from LSV June 27th. We bought and can't wait to close on 9/10/09. As I was told it's Disney for Adults. You want it it's here. Come enjoy have fun. As other posters have said you're husband will have no problems. And everyone we've met or talked to during our visits have been very honest and helpful. We're all in the same boat, looking for a better life with no pressure in our second childhood.

I don't live in The Villages but my wife and I have visted several times. My wife uses a walker and we have never had any problems negotiating the squares or various restaurants with her walker. They have nice sidewalks throughout both Spanish Springs and Lake Sumter Landing and the traffic in the sqaures goes slow enough that crossing a street was never a problem. When we went for our lifestyle visit we rented a golf cart and hooked the walker onto the back so we always had it with us when visiting the squares.
I will note that you will not see a lot of people with walkers or wheelchairs. My wife did feel a little uncomfortable, not because of access problems, but because it is an active community and she didn't see anyone else with a walker or wheelchair during our entire stay. In fact, she even asked our sales agent about that. The sales agent just said that as people get older and less mobile they tend to stay at home more. Anyway, my wife and I have found lots to do in The Villages despite her disability and the fact that neither of us play golf. I'm sure that your husband can access any of areas around the sqaures that he wishes to access. Hopefully, the two of you will enjoy your visit. |

My wife has a bad foot (surgery gone bad) and although she can walk, it is only for short distances. When we go to some activities I wheel her around in a wheelchair with no problem. In and out of the squares, in and out of stores, in and out of restaurants, it doesn't matter. A lot of the larger stores and markets have scooters for shoppers which has also helped.

Beware
"Finding a home" is a process that requires a lot of due diligence.... it is a process that if correctly done, takes months. You will be overwhelmed by the size of The Villages, the variety of home styles, locatons, lot variations etc. The wisdom is to RENT a home for 3-6 mos. This allows an unhurried, well researched purchase. Good luck.
