Default Cost for moving

I just received a letter from Johnny and Debbie Dixon telling me that they finally made up their mind and will be moving down here later this year! They asked me how much will it cost to movie their furniture down here from up north, as well as taking all their stuff they had in storage? They once had a 1000 square foot house, and their new(er) home is around 1500 square feet.

They also asked me about how big the garage would be, as well as any nearby shed space available so they can store their stuff with ease! They just want to make their new home just like their old one! The only difference is that it will be just them living at the house (kids now live somewhere else), and the weather around the home will be a lot better to face--or so they hope!

Any information posted here will be later sent to Johnny and Debbie so they can decide in what to do and how to do it!

Thanks!

We sold all of our furniture and larger items because the cost to move it was going to be almost what we paid for the furniture. We rented a 20' uhaul to move the remaining items. Total costs was around $500 for the uhaul and another $200 for boxes & packing materials. We tried to use all the same size boxes so they stacked well in the truck. I've also seen some people who purchased storage tubs for their move. Tubs are now in the attic whereas our cardboard boxes are in the recycle center.

I sold a 5 bedroom house and hired a liquidator to sell everything in it. I came here with only my clothes. Maybe not for everyone, but, it was the best decision I ever made. It is surprising how inexpensive and less stressful it is to start over from scratch.

Better yet, tell them to call the sales office and ask for a Newcomer's packet, it has all the floorplans which have garage sizes. Also, you let them know that sheds are not allowed, however you already knew that, didn't you.
Can we have an underground shed? Unless the infamous two ladies in the golf cart see it seems like we can get away with it.

Given that it seems Johnny and Debbie need an intermediary to ask questions, instead of just becoming a member here themselves, leads a person to think that they will at least be saving money on paying to ship a computer - or hassling with even smart phones.

I don't know the cost, but, beware of lowball movers, do your homework. There are fly by night movers that will low ball and keep your belonging' s hostage for additional $$$.

Unless furniture is extremely sentimental or a family heirloom, you may want to sell and buy furniture with a Florida feel when you make the move. I know how tough it is to get rid of STUFF! Some people have been extremely unhappy with how movers handle their STUFF

I would not rent storage units or plan on filling up the garage with extra boxes of stuff. If it's earmarked for storage you most likely do not need it. I agree with the others who advise selling most of the bulky stuff and bring the clothes that you actually wear, family photos, family heirlooms that can be handed (not hauled) to the kids when the time comes. We haven't downsized, yet, but when we do that is the approach that I want to take.
