Furnace Filter fit
Just moved into a patio villa. The last owner marked the furnace filter as 15 5/8 x 19 3/16 x 4 5/16. Will a 16X20x4 filter fit? These things are expensive! Thanks

There should be a part number on the existing filter, when you go to the store make sure the one you are buying states it suitable replacement for that part number. Make sure you install the filter in the correct direction (air flow), and also the filters my AC take are NOT square, therefore they only fit in one way. Use the same MERV rating ours is 11, going to a different rating may effect air flow and the operation of the AC unit.
On a side note I twice tried getting replacement using the "nominal" size and and in each case had to take the filters back when they did not fit correctly. I believe the local stores have figured this out and are not stocking the correct filters.

You can pull the model number from the indoor air handler (which houses the filter) and Google the Carrier part number and order on-line. The Carrier OEM filter will probably run about $30 but they are typically good for a year.

Probably. As I recall a 24 x 24 filter might be 23 5/8. Thus I would pull out and measure and then go to lows an measure one there.

ACE hardware in Wildwood has a good inventory of Villages filters.

Same size as mine
You have a Carrier air handler. You can go on line to Discount filters.com and order the filter. You have to order the exact size. Also looks like you wrote 3/16 when it is actually 13/16.

I buy mine from ACE Hardware in the 16 x 20 x 4 inch size. Thay are made by Flanders and cost about 18 dollars each. I have bought the same nominal size filters from Lowes and Home Depot, but I had to return them because they were too large to fit into my Carrier unit. If you buy filters from an HVAC company, you will probably pay about 50 dollars. And, if you buy them online, you can run the risk that they won't fit.

Filters
Filters are measured 2 different ways. "G" for grille size and "S: for standard size. A 16x25 S filter is 16' X 25 ". A 16 X 25 G filter is 15 5/8 X 24 5/8 so it will fit in a 16 X 25 return air grille.

To directly answer the OP's question:
Yes. 16 X 20 will fit. This is not a complex question and does not require a complex answer. |

I bought cases of "G" filters for years, for use in laundromats. They were about $2.00 per filter. Looks like there is a big markup in Florida.

I bought a 16 x 20 inch filter from Lowes and a different brand from Home Depot and both types were too large to fit into my unit. But, the 16 x 20 inch Flanders brand sold at ACE Hardware do fit.
